Maintain your AC roof units!

Hello Folks,

I know that there is a topic of what I'm about to tell you but every time I search for anything that I'm looking for, it always shows 'no match'. Anyway...

I noticed yesterday that my front AC unit was dripping water inside. We have a long ceiling panel the covers the front and middle AC vents and returns. I opened the panel and water started dripping from the panel so I put down a small bucket to let it drain overnight.

This morning, I go to check everything. Our coach is designed so that the condensation from the AC units will drip down a tube under the coach. Sometimes, depending the way we are tilted, the two drain cups will fill up and spill on the roof. That is no real problem as I need to blow-out the tubes occasionally.

But, that still didn't explain the water coming inside. I checked the four bolts that hold the air unit on the roof and I could't believe how loose they were. I'm talking at least ten turns on each screw. On the roof side, the bolts stick through at least 3 inches beyond the roof bolt.

So, I check all three units and all were needing about the same amount of tightening. I cleaned the filters and roof coils while I was at it. After running the front air for a while it appears that the tightening was the issue.

After 6 years and 62,000 miles, everything needs to be checked that has a screw, bolt or nut, etc.

Safe travels!

Guys, I know about 'squashing' the gasket, I could have turned those screws another 10 times each. But thanks for the heads up.

Bisquit, I'm not an electrican but will check those electrical items. I just had the Aqua-Hot serviced and the service tech found the 'level detector' screws on the my fresh water tank were loose too (it's right next to the AH).

You just squashed the gasket. You should only tighten them a turn or so every few years. Probably too late to undo them. Watch for leaks and when it starts leaking again you will have to pull the units off and replace the foam.

Those four bolts are what holds the ac unit in place.

Hope you didn't over-tighten them.......only need to be snug.

They compress the roof gasket. The gasket is roughly 1" thick and should be compressed to about 1/2".

Might want to check wiring termination screws also.....power cord receptacle, AC distribution, DC distribution etc.
They also loosen.
Is it time for your medication or mine?
