Repairing Levelers

My Class A has power gear hydraulic levelers and two of them have started leaking when extended. I looked on the power gear website and it list repair kits. My question is how easy/hard is it to repair or should I just buy new ones? I am fairly mechanical and think the small campground we are in now would not have a problem with me doing it.

I had my local hydraulic shop repair mine. The local garage I use for oil changes and such was able to remove it and replace it for me. They charged me $100.00 at the hydraulic shop to rebuild it, and the garage charged me $50 to take it off and $100.00 to put it back on.. I am happy.

I rebuilt one of mine last month. I ordered the seal kit for about $140.00 instead of paying the rv shop over $1300.00 do to it. Went on-line and found a "how too" procedure with pictures. Took me about 4 hours taking my time.

I installed a seal kit in one of my rear levelers last year. pretty easy job and the kit comes with very detailed instructions. Bought my kit from CW on line at a cost of $68.00. Took about 2 hrs but most of the time spent was getting the leveler off the coach. The next one will be much faster.

Over the last 5 years I've had 2 of my powergear levelers leak...somebody on this board recommended "painting" the stainless rams with automatic transmission sealer fluid then cycling the units. Believe it or not it has worked for me, no leaks in the last several years...pretty cheap to try first.

I had a local hydraulic shop rebuild mine after I took them off. Only 110.00 each and he did a pressure test after rebuilding them. You can get the seals at any hydraulic repair supplier you don't need to go to power gear.

You can also down load the repair manual to repair them on the power gear web site.

PDDGM,
I rebuilt two of the four on my previous coach, a '99 Fleetwood Bounder 34V with the F-53 chassis and V-10. Rebuilding them was incredibly easy. Getting them off and handling them out from under the coach is the tough part. They are not all that heavy but, they are AWKWARD while in the semi-mounted (almost all the bolts off and out) position. While it can get crowded, two of you under there handling them in the transition from frame to hands and the opposite when done rebuilding them, is way better.

I thought there would be some serious tightness on the gland nut that holds the end and seals all together but, not so. I clamped it in the vice (padded and curved so as to not "crimp" the cylinder)and, had a rather ultra large wrench, (over two feet long) and, that gland nut just popped off with out almost no effort.

Now, when I did it, Power Gear was still sending rebuild kits to us laymen. But, as I understand things now, they only send to authorized repair centers so, you better check out IF you, as an individual, can actually receive the parts or not.

But, in the kit was a totally new gland nut, and a revised set of seals etc. The newer style is seriously less complicated and better. It was very simple. If you have a place to do the work and not get things dirty, once you have it out from under the coach, and have the new parts ready to install, you can do the entire job of disassembling, rebuilding, and reassembling it in about 10 minutes. Then, it's the chore of getting it back under the coach and, holding it in place while bolts are installed. Keep all your fittings free of dirt, dust and debris while the jack is off.

Any questions PM me and I'd be glad to lend a hand.
