replacing back window on an Itasca Navion

We have a 2007 Itasca Navion. This floor plan puts the bathroom at the back, with a fixed (non-opening) window just above the biffy (also known as toilet), on the back wall of the RV.

We like to sleep with windows open, except when it's really cold out, and I'm wondering why Itasca didn't make that an opening window. Does it have to do with exhaust gases in the wake of the RV, or was it just a $$ saving move?

If it's a safe thing to do, is it feasible/not too expensive to get a window made to fit the opening? I'd probably use single-hung - one pane slides up from the bottom.

I have same setup as Iamichabod has & use it the same way, makes for nice cross breeze with other windows.

I would install the "emergency" type and be done with it. I would make sure new "emergency" window fits old frame, so no other mods have to happen.

Find a copy of nfpa 1192 for your year model. I believe what you have is not a "ventilation" window, but an emergency exit, which is "Normally unopenable alternate exit" or "emergency exit".

See bolt font below.

6.4.3 Combustion Engine Exhausts and Vehicle Wall Openings.
6.4.3.1 The terminus of combustion exhausts shall extend beyond the periphery of the vehicle and discharge exhaust gases away from the vehicle. Diesel exhaust systems complying with EPA emissions regulations effective January 1, 2007, shall be permitted to have the terminus no more than 12 in. (305 mm) inside the periphery of the vehicle and shall discharge exhaust gases away from the vehicle.
6.4.3.2 The terminus of combustion exhausts other than the primary mover engine shall not be permitted within a vertical distance of 36 in. (914 mm) below any expandable portion of the recreational vehicle.
6.4.3.3 Combustion exhaust components installed by the recreational vehicle manufacturer shall not extend or protrude in a manner that could subject them to road damage.
6.4.3.4 Combustion exhaust shall not terminate so that a communicable air passage exists into the living area within an area defined by a distance of 6 in. (152 mm) measured from the tailpipe terminus perimeter as projected onto the vehicle side.
6.4.3.5 Vents or windows that can be opened for ventilation shall not be installed in the rear wall of motorhomes and truck campers.
6.4.3.6 Normally unopenable alternate exit windows shall be permitted in rear walls.
6.4.3.7 Rear entry doors with fixed windows shall be permitted in truck campers.
6.4.3.8 Rear entry doors with fixed windows shall be permitted in motorhomes, provided that no combustion exhausts discharge from the rear of the vehicle.

Working from 2013 copy of rules. Not sure about your year. And they do change the rules every now and then.

(edit...adding on info) And my trailer 2012 year has a window that opens on rear, but it's on a Trailer. Wonder if that makes a big diff? And if so does why?)

My rear window opens,it is the escape window. I open it when parked to get better air flow as you would like to do,I have a screen that I put up also.

These people will make any type of window you want including one that will open,give them a call,they are very helpful and can answer all your questions.

Huh! On my 2016 Bay Star Sport the HWH is directly under the kitchen window and it DOES open. Exhaust from generator is routed to the front driver side wheel well and of course there is a opening window above it. I was told that the gen exhaust is there cause the gen is under a slide and it would clearly seem into the coach.

I do think the rear window not opening is by design or law for the reason stated. It would be easy for someone's to inadvertently leave it open and have exhaust and all sorts of other stuff sucked into the mh as you travel down the road.

Under RIVA guidelines, any window that is in an area where carbon dioxide or in your case carbon monoxide is emitted, cannot be an opening window because of the chance of noxiuos gasses entering the unit. I have the same scenario on my unit, but on the side. My HWH is under the window over the kitchen sink and it's non-opening. When I was at the factory I asked about replacing it with an opening window (radius torque slider) and was told, 'we can sell you a slider window but you have to install it yourself as we cannot. I decided not to.

They aren't that hard to replace, you pull the inner screws out of the frame, remove the inner frame and then take a putty knife and separate the outer window from the body carefully breaking the butyl tape bond and replacement is just the opposite with new sealant tape but I understand the issue with asphysiation so I passed.
