Replacing ceiling vinyl

Hello! We decided to pull off all of the vinyl from the ceiling of our 30' 95 Winnebago Adventurer. It's got this black foamy stuff underneath, just maybe a 1/4" thick or so. Is that just the adhesive or something? Should I just scrape that off? We're thinking about applying some of that stick-on stuff to make it look like a wooden ceiling or something (unless there are better recommendations). Thanks!
I can post pics... As soon as I figure out how. Lol

I am in the process of doing this currently. I will do it in sections starting with the Bedroom. Two pieces. I used a grill brush to get 98% of the foam quickly then Goo Gone for the clean up. You should wear a mask. I am going to use RFP wall board with the edging. It looks like they are using this in some of the newer RV's. I will get some Pictures later and see if I can post them.

I seem to remember from previous post that this job can require removing the ceiling cabinets too depending on how far you want to get into the job. I think it would be pretty high up on the list of jobs I don't even want to think about doing.

Here is the link to the company I got my glue and headliner material from.

My dash had vinyl glued to it that had a black foam backing. The foam had deteriorated and the vinyl was loose. It was glued to the metal dash. Might be a similar product. I scraped it off with a putty knife and covered the dash with carpet.

On a ceiling, I'd worry about the weight of the replacement product. Is there wood under the foam?

You might look at "headliner" material that they use in cars. It comes in many colors and is light weight. If you were in Knoxville I could tell you where to get it but you'll have to source it on the web yourself.

It has a foam backing that's about 1/4 inch thick and you'd use a spray adhesive to secure it. Use "3M"!!!! You'll have to deal with the seams though. Depending on the structure of your ceiling you may have to get creative. Maybe use some pre-finished "wood" trim that matches your RV or use trim and cover it with a matching or coordinating fabric.

You could staple the fabric to the top side of the trim, then screw the trim to the ceiling (with the fabric hanging down). After the trim is secured, you could wrap the trim with the fabric using more spray adhesive and tuck the non-stapled side in (over the top) with a butter knife. I did that in the bedroom with a 1x4. I added foam to the 1x4 after it was installed before I finished covering the board. Looks good.

PS: I cut a grove in the top of the 1x4 and used it to run some speaker wires.

I had a 95 Brave and the vinyl also started dropping. The black is actually the foam that was glues to the vinyl and it is deteriorating and it gets sticky like glue. You need to scrape it all off down to the wood before anything will stick to it. I used a paint thinner and then washed it down with soap and water. I re-did mine with headliner material and used Super 77 spray contact cement to hold it up. Had a post here several years ago with pictures.

The black is the cushy part of the ceiling vinyl. You can attempt to scrape it all off. usually you replace the wood ceiling panel and then apply the new vinyl or fabric. On some models(Monaco) the ceiling panel came as a 4 by 8 foot panel, vinyl and wood backer as a unit. You cut to fit. Unless you get it totally clean nothing will adhere to the wood panel. Unless you have a totally smooth surface, anything you attempt to glue will show the sub panel imperfections. Doug
