Transmission 1988 Chevy P30 - Sticks in Low Gear

After driving over 800 miles from home, the transmission starts sticking in low hear once I reach the Central Valley of California. Called AAA Roadside Assistance (RV Type) they were no help and sent a truck over for a batter jump. The driver did not even know how to check the transmission fluid. I told him I thought it was under the cover in the cab because we checked thoroughly under the hood. He started to open the cover in the cab and had problems getting the bolts to unscrew. So he gave up and told us we should bring it to a AAA approved repair shop, which was almost closed, 11/2 miles away. We followed him there, but because of the late hour and the holiday, they refused to help us, and again did not know how to check the fluid. They suggested looking under the hood again, because it must be there. They didn't even stock the transmission fluid for the P30. So we asked where the nearest auto parts store was hoping to find the correct fluid. He directed us to Napa Auto Parts where the man was very helpful and opened the cover in the cab, checked the fluid (it was full and clean) and suggested using Lucas Transmission Fix after syphoning off a quart of ATF. He sold us the Lucas Fix and the syphoning tool, which amounted to about $20. He was very helpful and even showed us how to get to the ATF dip stick and where to check the fluid - and add it. So we syphoned off a quart, added a 24 oz bottle of Lucas Transmission Fix, then topped it off with about 2 oz of ATF fluid. It ran smoothly for about twenty minutes but then reverted back to the lower gear on the freeway where we should have been travelling at about 55 MPH. It is still sticking in the low gear. We found a place to stay over night and now we are wondering what to do next as its Thanksgiving tomorrow and today was the only day we could see my daughter after travelling hundreds of miles. I wrote to another forum and the reply came back before even looking at my P30 that no manufacturer would recommend Lucas Transmission Fix and that the trainy had to be rebuilt. I am hoping for an answer that will be more helpful. I realize this is an older RV (1988) but it was well cared for, only has 50K miles on it and I have had it completely served twice since I bought it in July. The man who owned it before was 89 years old and kept it in his garage. I looked at reviews of Lucas Transmission Fix and they were all great. I recently has a new A/C condensor put in, new radiator and new belts and seals. Please help, we are worried about being stranded for a long time and wondering if this RV is worth it being so old and having put so much money into it already. Thanks.

None of that will help you with the bad trans. Unfortunately you are (were) stuck. But thanks for the update to your travel plans!

You need to take it to a trans shop so they can properly diagnose it.

Detent or 'passing gear' is activated by a sliding switch mounted on the throttle pedal frame under the dash. It send 12 volts to the spade connection on the side of the transmission to cause a down shift under certain engine speed. This switch is know to stick intermittently and prevent up shifts. Unplugging the wire @ the transmission is a quick fix until a new part can be sourced.

The gear in question is a nylon gear in the governor. They fail from time to time - can be replaced without removing the trans.

My brother had the same issue on his 88 Holiday Rambler. He took it to a transmission shop and they dropped the pan and replaced a plastic spiral gear that had something to do with it not shifting out of first. It cost $125.00 for parts and labor. The shop said this was a common occurrence.

Call a local transmission shop and they should be able to tell you if you may have the same issue.

Welcome to the forum.
You said it was serviced twice since you bought it, was the transmission serviced, filter and fluid changed?
