Traveling without a TOAD

Anyone on here do much RV traveling without a TOAD?

I don't have a vehicle that I want to tow so the best I can do is either put a motorcycle carrier on the back or buy a small bike trailer. I would prefer a carrier so I don't have to tow anything and worry about the trailer itself.

If anyone on here travels without a TOAD I would be interested in hearing what the tricks of the trade are fro that style of travel.

I would limit the weight of the cycle and rack to 500 lbs on the back of your 37' gasser.

On a typical trip out West, we usually put twice as many miles on the toad than we do on the RV. Sure you can rent when you are at certain locations but I guaranty that you are going to miss a lot of interesting sites along the way with any trip.

We often used Enterprise prior to getting our CR-V set up to tow. You can save a few bucks if you join their club and know your insurance options. If close to home we sometimes drove 2 vehicles or had the grands come by. Also we camped several times with friends who towed and shared their vehicle. I think having your own toad is the best option but situations vary.

We travel without a TOAD. I've considered buying a Jeep Wrangler for the convenience of towing it. For now, like the post above, we will rent a car if we need transportation while traveling. I do have an enclosed trailer that I tow my Harley in if we're going to be in an area conducive to riding....otherwise, we'll rent a car. I also contemplated the bike lift and after talking with a few folks at campgrounds that had them, they reminded me that it leaves your bike exposed to the swirl of air at the rear of the coach and with it all the dirt and debris that gets lifted.....in other words...sandblasted. I decided against that and went with the enclosed trailer. Don't even know it's back there.....

Its done. We had friends that traveled out west several times no toad. Big bike riders though thought nothing of pedaling 50 miles a day. Occasionally rent a car.

We did a 12 week swing out west towing a trailer behind our DP. Carried a scooter which let me go for groceries, run errands, etc.
A 150 Vespa will carry two people 60mph and carry an amazing amount of stuff if you have racks.

Enterprise does pick up but that wasted half a day a few times.
They run a route to pick you and anyone else up then drive you back to their office which might be 20 miles away and you rent the car there. Reverse the process to drop off. They don't deliver a car to you.

While we did ok and enjoyed ourselves on the trip we both agreed a toad makes it way more convenient and enjoyable.

I don't travel without a toad, but as a suggestion, I bought two Motiv electric bikes a few months ago. It's amazing how far the technology has come with the electric bike and the range is amazing on them. I had them in San Francisco this weekend and although we didn't go on the steepest of hills, we did go from the Ocean all the way up into the Haight-Ashbury area and all over Golden Gate Park and still had plenty of battery power left when we got back. If I didn't have a toad, I'd just get a bike carrier and take these bikes along and anything with a 10 to 15 mile radius of your camp site is easily reachable.

We have a friend who goes tow'd-less. He rents from Enterprise when he wants a vehicle. Apparently they really DO pick you up.

Like your motorcycle idea.
