What insurance to use

I have a 2001 Pleasureway Traverse that I use for travel and also as a daily driver. The insurance I have has gotten ridiculous. Just wondering if anyone uses their van as a daily driver and what insurance company they use.

AAA is the least expensive insurance I have found. Unfortunately they only insure as a vehicle and not as an RV with coverage for all items in the class B van, or in our case a class A. We have National Insurance, more expensive but at least the MH is covered as our home and not just as a vehicle.

Might I suggest telling them it is used for "pleasure" and only driven 3-4k miles a year? They don't actually check how many miles you drive your vehicle each year. But the more miles you say, the higher your premiums will be. The coverage won't change but your price will certainly go down if you tell them only a few 1000 miles a year. Do NOT say it is your daily driver. It's an RV, they do not expect it to be a daily driver.

We use geico and they're the cheapest we've found. Good luck.

Geico is the cheapest but they do not offer agreed or stated value policy. So you pay for what u get.

In my opinion and research geico seems to be even cheaper then progressive and is the best bang for the buck. But neither geico or progressive offer stated value or agreed value coverage for class b vans. I have my coachmen insured thru nationwide. I have a stated or agreed value policy of 10,250.

That is not true. I have a Class B Roadtrek 190 and my policy is with Progressive and I have "stated or agreed to value" coverage for $24,000.

Wow when I called progressive they told me they dont offer agreed or stated value. Gonna call back and check. What state did you have your van insured in?

I just sent in my payment for another year with Progressive and I do have stated or agreed to value on my Roadtrek. Since my policy is a renewal they may not be issuing new policies with stated or agreed to value at this time. I am in California.

Question.............. What year did you get stated value on your roadtrek? They might have stopped doing AV policys a while back, Just wondering. Because I know for sure I called them a few weeks ago and they said they dont offer AV policy.

I'm insured with AAA Michigan as a RV. I was very careful to get their assurances in writing that all the RV parts are covered. I have increased liability coverage to 1/2 Million, uninsured to 1/4 million, have $500 deductible on all except collision with $1,000 deductible. My cost was $280 for 6 months for my 1997 Class B. And when I store it (in my drive) for 3-4 months in the winter they cut back to only comprehensive & I save $.

But neither geico or progressive offer stated value or agreed value coverage for class b vans. I have my coachmen insured thru nationwide. I have a stated or agreed value policy of 10,250. I also have an additional 5,000 for customization and another 5,000 for personal property inside the rv. So its basically insured like a home. Nationwide will pay 10,250 no matter how old the rv gets. Its a set amount that never goes up or down. Im paying 118.00 a month but its well worth it, with deductibles of 250 on comp and collision. ACV or actual cash value is a cheaper policy and the insurance company goes by the book and gives u less money in case something happens.

I had just the opposite experience of loving retirement. My renewal with Progressive this year cost 15% less than the same coverage last year. I have what would typically be called "full coverage," with high liability limits, comprehensive, collision, towing etc. My total bill was well under $500 annually. I live in semi-rural southern Oregon, so that undoubtedly helps keeps premiums lower, but I have no explanation for the decrease.

Progressive has little benefits I am often not even aware of. When A rock cracked our windshield a few years back, we discovered we had a "disappearing deductible," which reduces your deductible 20% (I think) each year you don't have a claim. Since it was more than five years, we paid nothing for the windshield replacement.

When I originally got quotes from Progressive (the company) over the phone, they were higher than I expected. Next day, I called a local Progressive agent, and the quote was something like 10%-20% less. I guess it all comes out in the wash, but not sure if I really believe that. I think insurance companies make mistakes in pricing all the time. If not, why would you see ranges of quotes that vary by a factor of three from different companies? Anyway, I have been very happy with Progressive, but, as always, the rubber meets the road when you have a significant claim. No experience there.

Thanks everyone. I am going to start making some calls. I am a good driver, no claims, with excellent credit. Just need to do some phone work which I hate.

When I switched from Allstate to The Hartford - through AARP - I got the car, a pickup and our Pleasure Way Excel covered for what I was paying Allstate for the RV alone. However, we didn't use the PW as a daily driver.

retraite,

A great explanation. Insurance premiums depend somewhat on you and your history but a lot on the class you are put into. When a hurricane destroys property in Florida, the cost of property insurance increases whether or not your home was damaged.

I have been insured with Progressive since 2005 and have been satisfied with the cost of the annual premiums during that period until I received my annual renewal notice last week. Having a perfect driving record, filing no claims, with no accidents and receiving no tickets during that entire period my policy increased by over $220 or 38 percent in one year. Talked with two agents at Progressive and neither thought anything was unusual about the large increase. Anyone have a similar increase?

Sometimes it's not what you do, but what others do that affects your premium.

All insurance companies have folks called underwriters. These are not, usually, the folks you get to speak with when you call or visit. The job of the underwriter is to evaluate past claims (not yours so much, but all their customers as well as the customers of other companies), predict future claims and then "set a price".

Yes good drivers get a lower price, as do good credit risks, etc.

But, given whatever data your insurance company chooses to use (zip code, metropolitan area, state, type of vehicle, phase of the moon, astrological sign, whatever - OK, maybe not the last two), the underwriters then "sets a price" - lower for better "risks", higher for poorer "risks". So, your renewal could go up, or it could go down, but, to a point, it has nothing to do with your experience with them, rather the collective experience with them.

So, if you're not happy, call. Then, move it up a level - from phone agent to supervisor. Don't just "complain", be ready with your facts. Sometimes, just sometimes, they'll choose to "keep" you (just like your cable TV or cell phone provider). Sometimes not. In that case, call others.

In our case, our "B" is covered under an RV policy with the same agent/company we've been using for 49 years. But, when we "priced" our motorcycles, well, Progressive was less than half for the same cover. The only thing I "gave up" was that our "umbrella" policy would not extend to the motorcycles as the underlying cover was not with the same company as the umbrella. We accepted that risk.

Again, your increase may well have nothing to do with you directly. But, it may be associated with the type of vehicle, zip code, or similar.

Cheers.

Be careful with how it is insured. If insured as a van, some lump without insurance hits your van and destroys it, you will only get back the chassis value (the price of the van without any upfits like appliances, plumbing, electrical, furniture, etc.)
