Chromebooks?

I'm wondering if any of you folks are familiar with or own a Chromebook computer? I'm an XP user and have limited knowledge of the Chrome OS. They're priced quite reasonably but I'm sure there are some downsides. Can you educate me (us) on this system? Thanks...

Don't give me orders. Just because I read something a week ago doesn't mean I want to spend the time searching all over again. You can search too, right?

Thanks. I appreciate all your comments and suggestions. I'm leaning towards a "regular" laptop now with the Windows OS. I think that would suit my needs better. Been reading up on Windows 8. That's a different animal than XP for sure but it may be fun learning....

I picked one up about a month ago and love it. It stays nice and cool, it's fast, and starts right up every time. I use it mostly at home though.

You can run Ubuntu on Chromebooks, making them more versatile - and cheap alternative to Windows PC, especially the new ones with Haswell processor like the Acer C720.

Got my daughter a little chrome book for Christmas. Low cost easy to use. Ditto comments above that it has little storage, just about everything is stored online. The user interface is a web browser. Its a great machine for someone wanting to surf the web, email, or do video chats.

From what I am reading Chromebooks start around 200 dollars.

So what does an extra fifty get you if you shop around?

Well last month I happened into Staples.. The sign out front told me of the deal of the week,, I might add I got paid that week so..

Toshiba C-55D-A5381 Notebook 15.6" screen 1.4 Gig AMD CPU (that is about 2 Gig Intel) 4 Gig Ram, 500 Gig HD (1/2 Terra byte, 350 for the HD alone by the way). Windows 8.1

I'm not yet loving 8.1, but it's growing on me.

mr.ed - Be careful a Chromebook is completely different than what you are used to. That does not mean there is anything wrong with it, but you need to be prepared to completely change what you are used to. With Chromebooks you work completely on the web. So no downloading pictures or programs to your computer. If that is what you want to do then a Chromebook is for you. But if you want to upgrade your XP system it may not be. Windows, Apple, and Linux are all basically same as what you have now. But Chromebook means documents, pictures, and programs stay on the web only.

Not for me -- I want to be able to edit my photos, music, etc. I got a low end ASUS laptop for about $100 more than a chromebook.

Chromebook is more browser that can do some off line things .. Primarily google applications . If you are online all the time then Chromebook can be an inexpensive replacement. Windows programs no way .
