The AS-2003 is an older, discontinued and unsupported Winegard antenna. That doesn't mean give up, but there might not be much that can be done if you can't get it working on your own.
1) What kind of receiver are you using?
2) Before you attempt another search you need to power up the receiver, turn on the TV and go into the recevier setup menu and ensure the antenna type is set to 18" round and the switch type is set to Multi Switch. Now go to Signal Strength and then Signal Meter. Leave this on and ensure it shows satellite 101 and transponder #1. Now turn on the antenna and see if it will lock or if you at least see some signal strength show up. If it does lock then click the Continue button on the receiver menu and keep clicking Continue until you get to the end of the setup and are watching TV.
Let me know what you find.

Are you positive about that model number?
Dead LNB would be my first guess. These things go through a set set of scans looking for a signal. If they do not find it they are suppose to shut down and park after XX minutes. IF it keeps scanning that sort of means that it is not finding a signal, dead LNB or coax. Second guess is a bad control board. But we wont go there just yet.

I'm assuming you have walked her through the steps. You set it up at home but was there something you did that maybe she isn't doing ?
Like inputting the correct zip code in the receiver ?
