Hi from a newbie

I grew up caravanning in England with my family many years ago. I have many fond memories and I'd like to consider options here in Canada. My wife isn't interested but I thought I would scope out some options to see if anything could spark some interest in her. We have an eight year old who might enjoy the experience, especially if it gives us the ability to get away to a lake on weekends more often than we currently do. I think it's safe to say we're more tropical hotel people! 🙂

The kicker is, I don't want to tow anything. We don't own a vehicle that can tow and I don't want to buy one. I don't trust that either of us can tow, unfortunately. I haven't learned the lingo yet but we could try something we drive although I'd prefer something we can leave in situ and not have to transport/drive every time we want to use it. I realise this is a bit odd but that explains me to a tee! This would limit where we stay to within 2/3 hours of home.

Anyway, this is just a scatter brained introduction. I have a lot of reading to do to see if this is something we would want to do. Nice to see you all. Cheers

Great thanks for the replies. 'Motorhome' is the word I was looking for but completely forgot. I have a lot of reading to do I think. I also started looking at "local" campgrounds and RV sites that might be of interest. My dad used to buy one or two caravan magazines every month and he always had a stack in the house that I enjoyed reading when I visited England. I poked around some local dealer sites looking at used RVs of various types but that's getting way ahead of myself! It was fun though and really interesting to see how things compared to what I've seen in the UK. Cheers

Sounds like you might want a driveable motorhome and have the wife follow you in her car.

Some camp grounds have RV (trailers) you can rent. You could start with that no money out of your pocket except for the rental cost. There are RV trailer rental companies out there that rent you a trailer and will tow it to your site and set it up for you. You show up use it leave and they come and pick it up.

What you are referring to is being "seasonal". Where you would purchase a unit and leave it in a campground or RV park. Take your time with this thought to be sure you get the right unit - used or new and search out the area parks that you might want to place your unit in. What amenities does your family want? Depending upon your pocketbook, your wife could have almost everything she has at home I her camper. I know I do, all but the dishwasher. I even have a fireplace which I don't at home. Your child can develop some wonderful friendships with kids in the park and it is a great way to get away without the hassle of towing every weekend. Good luck.
