Newbie Intro And Some Advice

Hi everyone, my name is Lee, I am 42 married with an 18 year old son and 2 dogs. We moved to the us North New Jersey around 16 months ago. We love it, I personally love the outdoors and have a passion for wildlife and nature. I am into fishing and photography (see links below if you are interested). As a family we have not had a vacation in a long while and since coming to the US we really have not explored.

I would love to do a long RV trip next year and in preparation I thought it might be it might be cool to kill 2 birds with one stone while we have some of the summer left this years.

1. Get away for 4 days, just me and the wife
2. Try an RV

My son and the dogs will stay at home, he has fire school training and to be honest he will probably have a bunch of girls round, get drunk and generally do what kids do ๐Ÿ˜‰

With all this in mind I have some questions about what to rent in terms of an RV and where we can go? I donโ€™t want to drive a massive amount, remember, we only have 4 days.

โ€ข In terms of where to go I am thinking keeping it close, so the Catskills or Adirondack mountains? Any other suggestions?
โ€ข How do we find out the best places to stop overnight? And how do we pick a route that will take us to interesting and scenic places?
โ€ข What size RV should we go for. No everyone wants a Class A monster right? Maybe one day, but not this trip, that said I do want something oversized as I want to get the full RV experience.
โ€ข Who should we use? Who are the reputable firms to use?
โ€ข What should we look out for? The doโ€™s and donโ€™ts
โ€ข Any information you could us would be very much appreciated.

Thanks!!

We use an iPhone app called AllStays to find campgrounds and such. They also have a website you can check out if you don't want to buy the app. We have found it to be very helpful in figuring out where we would like to camp for the night. The app covers both private and public campgrounds.

We like the outdoors as well and prefer to stay in State Parks, National Parks and National Forest campgrounds. They typically have less amenities and the sites often don't have hookups (water, electricity or sewer). They generally make up for that by having more space between sites and costing less than a site at a commercial campground.

Good luck with your RV adventures.

I'd vote for the Adirondacks. Right up 17 to the Thruway and then continue on I-87 to Lake George, etc. There are plenty of campgrounds. Grab a NY map and look at www.rvparkreviews.com to match up the towns. Then invest in something like the Trailer Life Directory.

Try a Class C. They come in enough sizes to give you the real experience. Cruise America is one rental company with NJ locations.

Feel free to private message me if I can offer anything else. Enjoy!
