I was going to order a couple of cast iron camp pie makers from amazon but then I read the customer reviews about the handles coming loose, the bread not being crimped, things leaking out. etc and decided I better get some tips from the experts - YOU !!!!

What brand of camp pie makers is a good one?

What should I look for?

Where should I buy them?

Appreciate your feedback on this very important purchase!!!!

I have to give a vote to Palmer Mfg. Being that they work great are made local to me, I couldn't buy anything else.

We've also used small flour tortilla's in the round ones, but you do cut off some of the excess. Some will use a little bit bigger tortilla in the square ones and just fold over. That way, only one is used and not two.

they are very high quality. However a couple of comments. they were designed in days of old, when bread slices were smaller. seems like everything gets bigger with time. So... you either need to get sandwich sized bread, or cut bread to fit for the rectangular ones.

they also have a round one, and interestingly around here the thin round sandwich bread buns fit perfectly.

grandkids love the cheese sandwiches, I like a rueben. yup, come out great. and also makes a nice apple or berry pie.

and yes, get the carrying case. and season them well, just like any cast iron.

between rome pie irons, lodge dutch ovens and maytag firepit we hardly ever need to use the propane grill anymore.

Must be the size of the bread you buy (in reference to the square ones). We use sandwich or king thin bread and the fit about perfectly in the square pie irons. The round one of course are smaller and the round thins fit good in theme for making pizza pockets and etc. We also use the round ones for english muffins (breakfast sandwiches) and cinnamon rolls.

Still using one I got at Bass Pro in 1985. No idea of the brand but if handles come loose a little epoxy will cure that.

To add, Amazon has about the best price. Do yourself a favor and buy the carrying case also.

The seal is created by the bread or dough in between the iron edges. Leakage has never been an issue with us, cook on one side then flip. I would imagine if I kept the iron vertical it would leak.

I am not aware of any that make a positive seal. I got my cat iron pie irons at LL Bean

Rome Cast iron

They last forever, easy to clean. Make sure you season them 3-4 times
