I currently tow a 2011 Hyundai Accent manual behind my 27' Sightseer. Works okay and carries my kayak and bicycle. Volunteering in State Parks, US Forest Service areas with mostly dirt/gravel roads. Thinking of getting something with higher clearance that would carry my toys and deal better with the rough roads. Finding also I really like back country exploration. Suggestions? Probably budget will only handle something used. BTW, I am a full-timer and plan to remain so for at least 3 more years.

Thanks,
Sande

Look at Chevy and Geo Tracker's , Suzuki Samurai's and Suzuki Grand Vitara's.
4wd, towable four down and great off road clearance.

well if ya can find one thats not beat to death the isuzu rodeo is a good veh for what you want. 4wd, 5 sp manual. My BIL tows one behind his class A. Might be a little heavy for you however. It has a million miles it seems on it but runs well and he got it so he could go fly fishing when he travels. It also gets used as a daily driver by his grandson when they are home. I think its a early 90's and they are not all that expensive if you can find a good one. Look at craigs list in your area, then maybe expand to others. An older bronco 2 might also fill the bill, fairly small and light for the time made. Be careful looking at the gm products as they were known to have engine problems. The B2's did too but that was the 2.9 v6, easy to upgrade if you can find a good chassis to a 4.0 ohv.

Not endorsing any but these are some examples:
