Wiring for 2000 Jeep Wrangler

We are towing a 2000 Jeep wrangler 4 down behind our 2006 Adventurer. The turn signals and brake lights work fine until we turn on the coach's lights. As soon as we do that, we no longer have turn signals or brake lights. We have tail lights and head lights.

We are using the roadmaster diode wiring kit and are running directly thru the jeep's electrical. We have rewired twice now to no avail. It is a 2 filament tail light, but we are not using a supplemental braking system.

We had no problems with our 2008 Wrangler, can't figure out why the 2000 is so difficult.

Could really use some help.

I would check and see if the umbilical plug at the jeep is wired correctly, making sure that the wires for ground and lights aren't reversed.

No amber lights. Diodes are in the right place. This morning, just for giggles, we installed a light bar that keeps the wiring separate from the jeep. Turns work, brake works UNTIL you turn on the coach lights. At that point turn signals and brakes do not work on either vehicle. Scratching our heads in frustration.

Just for giggles again, clamp a jumper cable on between the two vehicles, just to make sure they have a common ground, unless you're sure that you have a good ground path all the way from the light bar to the neg. side of the coach chassis battery. Even at that, the wiring could be too small somewhere and robbing power when you load it up like that. What size is the wiring between the coach receptacle and the light bar, including the umbilical cord?

You have some answers to what might be your problem, so having said that, I hate toad wiring mods and diodes in particular, so unless you have a JK series Wrangler and use a COOLTECH plug and play wiring harness, my favorite install for many toads and SUV types in particular, is to make up a light bar or install lights on a hitch haul for the toad's receiver and just plug into that, keeping the wiring completely separate. You can even use your existing trailer connector for it as well, when not under tow for a few more lights back there. You'll also still have your regular brake lighting when towed using a supplemental braking system and for when the toad's brake pedal is depressed.

TKA,
Any Jeep "Wrangler" (that term was even used for some of the CJ models) prior to 2012 is extremely simple to wire for towing, using the jeeps tail lights as toad lights. We've towed SEVEN different Jeep Wranglers, each wired the same exact way, in the same exact spot, using the same exact system, each and every time, and not one issue.

Without seeing just how you wired it and, where it's tied in and, the installation of the diodes, this is a tad difficult to analyze just what the problem is. I will say this. If, your motor home has amber turn signals, it has (most likely you already know this) what's called a three filament system. But, depending on if the coach was done prior to you purchasing it, it should have a COMBINED output, for each side, i.e. Right turn/brake and, Left turn/Brake in the output at the trailer plug.

With that being said, then those wires, travel through the pig tail, and, into the jeep. If it was wired in this manor, i.e. Rt/brake "T" into the right turn brake on the Jeep, then, do the same for the left, left turn/brake "T" into the left side. A diode is placed in front of the "T" intersection of each of those connections and, that stops the signal that's incoming from the motor home, destined for whichever tail light, from back feeding to the steering column of the Jeep. You can "T" into the running light wire in the same area and, there's no need for any diode in that line.

Speaking of "where to do all this" The Jeep wrangler is insanely simple when it comes to that. You see, all the wiring for the Jeep wrangler tail lights is, right next to your left calf as you sit in the drivers seat of the Jeep. It's all under the door jamb lip. All you have to do is, get your trailer wiring to that point, then undo the loom at that lip, then, expose the right turn/brake, left turn/brake and, running light wires. Do your "T" and diode work right there and, you're done. You will not have any issues what so ever, if done that way.

Your choice, good luck.

OP:
Locate the diodes that are in the taillight circuit from the MH. Disconnect the wire that goes to the MH.
See if the lights work!
There was some diodes that were missed marked from one of the suppliers.

You've changed the diodes?

Sure sounds like the system is back feeding into MH through the Jeeps wiring.

The wiring is good. We think it may be the fact that this coach has a secondary turn signal/brake light half way up each side of the coach. Even though the coach is combined, this auxilliary signal may be actually making it a separate vehicle.

Can't figure out why turning on the coach lights makes all the lights on the jeep go out. It's completely cancelling out.

Did you install the jumper as shown here?

Where did you connect the ground in the Jeep. Make sure it is connected to the Jeep's ground.
Check the diodes. You could have one in wrong or is bad.
