Homeless Cat -- Now Spotacus' Legacy

On 18 Dec, a very large cat showed up at our house. It was late and cold, and he looked in the door and made it clear he wanted inside. Well, since we have two cats already and he was a stranger, we could not let him in the house. WLToo walked out and the cat ran to him, so he walked the cat into the garage and into the climate controlled room out there.

He was extremely hungry and thirsty, but in otherwise good condition and very clean. We fixed up a bed for him, set up the feeding and elimination stations, and went to bed.

Next day, we worked in the garage all day, while the big guy slept or supervised. We found him to be an intact male, no sign he's ever worn a collar, and he has a strong need to be in the general vicinity of humans. For an intact male, he's remarkably mellow - I don't think he was the alpha cat in his previous home.

Have had zero responses to the "found cat" notices around the area and online, so we'll be working with the local rescues to get him neutered and all his shots, then find him a home. We can't keep him because he's just too big for our two cats to share our small house. Alex would have another emotional meltdown, and I don't want to go through that mess again (long, ugly story).

For now, we're calling him Spot, not that he answers to it (does answer to "Kitty, Kitty"). No idea how he travels; we'll find out when we take him to the vet on Tuesday.

If anyone knows of someone who would like a large (about 15-18 pounds) cat who needs to be with people, please let me know. No cat novices, please; this cat needs someone who knows exactly how to handle an adult cat of this size, especially when he's feeling frisky.

We're at Canyon Lake, TX, so if there are any Winter Texans nearby who would like to meet him and maybe give him a home, that would be great.

The humidity has finally dropped back to normal (about 30% or less), so even though the temps are high, the breeze and low humidity make it less onorous to be outside. Boats are all over the lake today, and the traffic is horrendous, according to our local info boards. That's why we spend summer weekends at home, looking at the lake from a distance and the comfort of our own pool and deck.

As for Czarny? He was sitting on my chair arm earlier, ducking each time he saw a barn swallow fly by the window. Poor guy has to tolerate the swoopy birds for at least another 2 months, before he can go outside without me right beside him.

SU didn't have a chocolate craving, but he's happily eating them. Our Army buddies will join us for lunch tomorrow, and I expect them to help SU finish off all the chocolate.

Time to make sure we have all the ingredients for tomorrow. Later, ya'll.

Happy birthday to SU. May he enjoy many more. That olive place sounds good. Might have to look into that. I take it that SU has a chocolate craving?

Canโ€™t blame Czarny for staying inside where itโ€™s cooler. I think Iโ€™d suffocate in your weather.

Right nasty yesterday, but today is only 94, feels like 98, humidity 48%, with a breeze, so not bad at all. Took Spousal Unit, Tall Friend and Army Buddy Fiddler to the Texas Hill Country Olive Company, where we ate lovely food, then bought olive oils and balsamic vinegars. I plan to get some Stella Rosa peach wine, add a bit of peach balsamic, a pickled peach with a bit of pickle juice, then sit on the deck in the breeze and enjoy a nice, cold, peachy beverage.

Today's Spousal Unit's birthday; got him a triple chocolate cake and fudge-covered brownies. They're all his -- way, way too many carbs for me.

Czarny spent less than five minutes outside today, before deciding it's so much nicer looking out there from his tower.

The entire fox family appears to have taken up residence under our deck. Each morning, Papa Fox supervises the three kits as they play on our deck table and chairs, while Mama Fox gets a break. Then he leads them through the fence and they're gone for the day. Not sure just when they come back, but it's after dark.

It's cooler now, so I'm heading outside. Later, y'all.

Not too shabby. I'll wait for the 2.0 version.

Czarny is quite smart to know it's just not a good day to go out. I like an afternoon nap myself.

There's been some nasty weather in the South. I'm sorry to hear about all those tornadoes and deaths. Wish I was younger and stronger to help out.

Heard about an ST:NG bluetooth communicator badge that's available now. Stuck the link in the Star Trek thread so others can have a geek, I mean peek, at it.

ArielSummer, welcome to the thread. Spotacus found a home with us, and was the best traveling cat ever. We lost him way too soon to cancer, but this thread is his legacy.

Summer has arrived, with a vengance. Czarny will sit just inside an open door and sniff the air, then decide it's not a going outside kind of day. His choice...

Papa Fox and two kits played on our north porch and deck yesterday evening. Papa would occasionally look in the windows to make sure we didn't get out of our chairs. They are so entertaining to watch.

We also have a rather well fed raccoon that comes up on the deck each evening. I believe it's the reason one of our pool skimmer lids is flipped open so often -- it wants a drink of slightly salty water...

Ooo, hummingbirds are looking into the window. Better go refill the feeder. Later, y'all.

Glad you're keeping Czarny away from the vixen and her pups. Foxes can do serious damage to a cat.

Hope the novella goes well. Westerns are popular again. First Longmire then Yellowstone are hitting a chord with fans.

We'll have to go to Longmire Days next year. Had a big repair bill that ate into the travel budget. State parks for us this year which we thoroughly enjoy. Then there was the Scotland trip we'll never forget.

Turns out I am allergic to that bandage adhesive; it just took longer to manifest than other brands. Leaving it open to the air now and it's feeling somewhat better.

Hittin' 90+ degrees today. Czarny sat in the doorway and thought about going outside, but didn't. He bounces into the great room periodically for some pettins, then goes off to take another nap.

Good thing he's staying inside, too. Mama Fox and 3 kits were bouncing around and under the RV, surprising me as I headed out to it. I tossed Mama some limp celery and came back inside - she knows we're no threat, but I'm not taking any chances when her kits are out and about. I've figured out her morning schedule, but not the evening one, so if we have anything to feed her, it will be about 0900 each morning.

We see does who are no longer pregnant, but haven't seen a single fawn. I do hope whatever disease it is that kills the fawns isn't going around again. We're kinda short on deer now.

Otherwise, it's pretty quiet around here. I'm editing Spousal Unit's late brother's western novella, hopefully for publication on 20 Jun, which would have been his birthday. All proceeds will go to sister-in-law.

Speaking of, time to get back to editing. Later, y'all.

My wife has a latex allergy and can't use some of the bandage adhesives. Hoping your hubs gets some helpful pain relief. Weather bothers my joints but nothing drastic. Keeping him in prayer. Poor Czarny man can't enjoy his kingdom. He probably thinks those birds are pterodactyls.

Longmire Days are enjoyable in a laid back kind of way. I recommend getting the series in a dvd set so you can binge at your leisure. It's really better to be able to watch two or more episodes in one sitting.

A bit broody, plot twists, some murder and mayhem action yet punctuated with humor. Not a stereotypical western drama. Some philosophical conversations between friends (remember the asymptote).

The old retired sheriff played by Peter Weller is one of my favorite characters in the series. Pure cowboy poetry in motion.

Some memeage to inspire your interest in Longmire:

Had a cold front come through and it dropped the pool temp just enough to make it too uncomfortable for folks to climb in and scrub algae. I raised the salt cell setting to a full 24-hour chlorine production instead. Still need to scrub stains, but pool's clear.

Never heard of Longmire Days, but I've not read the books nor watched the TV show. Guess I'll look into them. Mom and Sister like 'em.

Spousal Unit's steroid injections into the herniated disk area produced no pain relief. Now they're going to do injections into nerves to see which ones are the problem. If outer, they'll score the nerve ending to stop pain transmission for 6-12 months. If nerve is up against the spinal cord, they'll have to do back surgery. Meanwhile, he thinks physical therapy is helping him in general. He rarely uses his walker anymore.

Czarny will only go outside if I'm with him now. With all six fledglings now out of the nest, there are that many more swoopy birds to scare him. When they leave in late August, he'll need about another month to realize they're gone, then he'll be back to his normal outside routine. I know he misses being able to sit on the deck and oversee his territory...

Had a biopsy on my foot Friday. It was messy for a day, bleeding through the bandages, then something else draining out. Feels okay today -- so far. Should get results in a couple weeks. Interesting thing is I'm allergic to most bandage adhesives, but haven't reacted to this particular brand/style yet.

Time to stir up something to eat. Later, y'all.

The concert was wonderful. Afterwards, us alumni all gathered onstage for a photo with our director. At age 92, he's still truly amazing, both as a director/conductor and as a mentor.

Barn swallows are feeding six fledglings, so Czarny won't even try to go outside on the north. I walk with him from the house's south side to the west side of the garage, where Obi-Wander is parked, before he feels safe outside. He managed several hours outside yesterday, but only about an hour today before he wanted back inside. If he decided to be a solely inside cat, I'd be fine with that.

Saw a Cook's Country episode for a pork loin cooked with 40 cloves of garlic. I'll be making that later this week. Gathering family tomorrow for enchiladas. Think I'll have each one of them take a turn at scrubbing the dead algae out of the swimming pool, too....heheheh.

Time to change the pool filter again. Later, y'all.
How did the algae-cleanup party go? Enchiladas sound great. I've done the 40 clove garlic loin before. It's easy at least the recipe I did was easy. Don't know Cook's Country haven't seen it. We're trying to add up the budget to see if we can make Longmire Days again this year. Robert Taylor and a number of the cast will be there including A Martinez. Should be good. Sounds to me like Czarny should retire from the outdoors and be a lap buddy.
