I lost my buddy Earl About a month and a half ago. I am looking for another new friend I got him from the pound at about 1 year old. I am looking to adopt from a rescue but I am worried about inheriting a dog with issues at the same time I want a dog instead of a pup for things like house training, attitude and to see the size and body comp more so then a puppy. I also think there are perfectly good dogs that deserve a second chance. This all being said I am looking for a dog that is a little skinny and lanky maybe up to 50 to 70 lbs. I want a GSD but I am worried about the campgrounds and barring them from the list so I am looking for something else. I know a lab is a safe bet but I don't think I want to go that route. He will also have to be able to run free around the marina and be around customers. Male or female? I kind of like males. Pleas help.

I have been thinking of a names that either start with ku or coo or end in joe but the best I can come up with is Mo-JO or just Joe.

Yes she was crazy but she grew up in the shelter so at least she wasn't abused. My wife found a white GSD who's owner was getting their house foreclosed upon but The owner named him KU-JO so you see what kind of people you are dealing with. I have a customer who runs a GSD rescue. She is going to go temperament test him tomorrow. then I'll have to make a decision weather to move forward and meet him etc.

I went to look at Levi the other day. He has been severely abused. I think he would be better off in a home / farm setting with less people then I can give him. I am afraid he may get cornered in the shop or office and react poorly if he feels threatened. He took to my wife but he was scared of me. It breaks my heart to think about what these dogs go through before they get to the shelter.

If this will be your only dog, I would get a female. I would get a male as a second dog if you ever get that far, opposite sexes do better together I think.

If you have concerns about what dog to get, I would pay a dog trainer to go with you. There are a lot of signs a dog will give off that someone with experience will pick up on after spending just a little time with the dog. The local Humane Society here has a yard you can use to spend time with a dog before you pick one.

In Atlanta, there's actually a trainer that helps people pick dogs for free. I'd gladly pay $100 for the service when I get my next dog though.

We have had good luck with Boxers , they don't bark much & are the class clowns. They do need to be trained & can be high energy....... If trained well they can be laid back, & the sweetest dogs. Good luck with your search.

Any dog that might be a lab mix and has been in a shelter, at this point may very well appear high strung. In fact what this dog needs is exercise and someone to play with.
A tired dog is a happy dog!
I think Levi is a great looking dog, don't see Pitt in him at all.
American bulldog and not sure what else, doesn't matter, appears to be a lovable dog.
Hope you can take him home!

Levi looks adorable and sweet.... I would definitely believe he has some pit in him from the body language and the face a little bit. Very heavy build though, it seems, more like a bulldog, and there's clearly something else in there that is neither. A purebred heinz 57, all American dog, to be sure.

When are you going to meet him?

If Levi and you turn out not to be a good match, I've had three sight hound crosses, all fantastic dogs with the lanky build you mentioned. One lab/greyhound cross (Best.Dog.Ever.), one afghan/collie/shep mix (spooky, but still a beautiful boy and a wonderful companion), and the current one is lab/deerhound. All great dogs, two very social, one spooky, all good off-leash, dog social, and safe around strangers.

Crosses or mixes are a little less intense that way. You don't get ALL of the sight hound tendencies to quite the degree, or with the lab, you don't get ALL of the lab exuberance and the hardheadedness some display early on. Getting a purebred anything means you get the full dose of that breed's tendencies, so you want to be sure that's a breed you're comfortable with. I used to have a pit/boxer mix, and after she died the universe sent me a full on pit. Wow! She's so.... pittie! Fortunately, I love most of the characteristics that brings.

My current lab/deerhound cross, Hally, came from Alabama. I thought that was a really unusual mix to find, but it turns out that people use them for hunting in the south. They're called lurchers. You aren't that far from that part of the world, so you might find someone suitable within a day's drive. If Levi doesn't work out.

Looks like a bulldog mix to me, not pit. He's adorable! Bulldogs are like boxers - you need to be the boss for them to respect you. That doesn't mean you have to be mean, you just have to mean what you say. If you have that type of personality, go for him!

Oh heck, he is beautiful! Bulldog/lab looks about right to me. I don't immediately think "pit" when I see him. He gives the impression of being lovable and eager to please. That equals very trainable, in my book. I hope he's there Thursday.
