Turn for the worse

As you know, Buddy Blue was diagnosed with metastatic CA in Sept. We kept him comfortable with pain meds and promised if it got worse, we would end his suffering.

Suddenly, his rt jowl thickened even worse than before and he was drooling thick mucus and had it in his eyes as well. He couldn't drink or eat without difficulty.

After discussion with the vet, we decided we could no longer be selfish. We had to let him go. It was so hard. I cannot believe that I could cry so much. DH is devastated. To make it easier on him, I went alone. They were inseparable.

The vet was so compassionate and didn't hurry me. She sat on the floor with me for an hour while I held him and sobbed. I told her funny stories about his life and am still tearing up as I write this.

He was a darling who was our best friend. He's at peace now, but I miss him so. Duncan still wanders the house looking for him and checks the yard to see if he's returned. It's heartbreaking. He's never been alone...ever. Any suggestions?

Thanks for listening to me. I know you all understand how I feel. Give your babies a hug and kiss in memory of Buddy Blue, the best friend ever.

First I am so sorry for your loss, it does cut very deep and will be with you for a long time, sadly.

We had a duo that were inseparable, they were like twins. When our Lab Sofie passed our Pom Zachery was just so sad, it was hard to get him to eat or have any interest in anything.

After a couple of weeks my DH said enough, it broke his heart to watch Zack and his depression so he found a beautiful Lab puppy and brought her home.

Of course at this point Lucy was small so Zack took an interest in her and they slowly bonded but what it did was it gave Zack something to focus on and watching that puppy was a full time job.

On to four years later Zack died suddenly and in my whole life I have never seen a dog so inconsolable as Lucy was, it was so heart breaking for all of us but Lucy just stop living, had no interest in walks, swimming or chasing her chickky (tennis ball)

It took about a month we found the right dog to rescue...he was a throw back Pom I wanted to adopt.
Lucy was ok but looked at me with eyes that were still sad but that quickly changed when she found she could play with and rough house with this guy named Bubba.

To this day they are joined at the hip and all is well with their life.

Everyone has to decide for themselves what is right for them, for us it's always having two dogs and while it hurts so soon after a loss it has worked very well for us.

He was a world traveler and people would ask to take his picture everywhere we went. He was especially photogenic at the Keukenhof and folks would have us pose him with flowers. He was a real sport.

I always made up little songs about him and still find myself singing them.

"Buddy Blue pancake mix (he loved them), everybody loves the blue, we really, really do, everybody do...love you!"

I'm trying to post a picture, but it's getting the best of me.
Apparently, there's an easier method but I'm not posting savvy.

So very sorry to hear about Blue Buddy. Cherish your memories of your life together, grief as you need to and know that you did everything for him and he is now at the Rainbow Bridge with so many of our babies. I am sure they are all sharing their wonderful life on earth. God Bless you will be in my thoughts and prayers.

This is often the terribly heartbreaking price we pay for enjoying the love of a pet.... so sorry for your loss (((HUG!))) My Ike (R.I.P.) was a young guy when we had to put his buddy Nick down; the first night was awful because Ike insisted that we search everywhere to "find" Nick. But after that, he settled down; and was just glum for a few weeks.

Fast forward a decade - when it was time to send dear sweet Ike on that final trip, I wanted to avoid that "must find him at all cost" response from Jimmy and Jack. They were in the car when we went to the vet; and in a moment of clarity, I brought Ike's collar back with me to the car. I showed it to the 2 dogs, and between the empty collar and my clear grief, I think they understood that Ike wasn't coming home? Jack didn't seem to care; Jimmy needed a week or so of TLC (or else Jimmy sensed that *I* needed the TLC). At any rate, we made it through, and then puppy Ben came into our lives 8 weeks later and provided a delightful distraction.

I am in tears. Buddy had a good life and went out loved, that is all we can ask. The pain will ease. We have two old dogs who are close to our hearts, it is going to be mighty tough when the time comes.

So very sorry for your loss. I know how much it hurts. When we had 2 and had to let 1 go, the other became very clingy and needy of affection. We freely gave him what he needed , allowing him to sit on our laps as much as he wanted, and cuddled, held and petted him. Because he lost his female companion, he was afraid to let us out of his sight - probably afraid we wouldn't come back. We took him everywhere possible and rarely left him alone.
