Sounds like it is not getting gas soon enough. Mine has a priming switch at the local control you are supposed to hold for 10 seconds before starting, you hear the pump pumping gas to the generator. From the remote station it usually takes about the same amount of time to start. Could also be the choke not working correctly, which would make it harder to start. Mine was sticking and hard to start until I found the problem and fixed it. I have the Generac 5.5kW unit

Mine has always started but sometimes it takes a lot of cranking. I believe the gas in the line to the genny runs back into the tank. Maybe the shot of starting fluid get the genny running and is more effective at getting the gas to the generator.

this is going to be a question I did answered also. a friend of mine said he went out to the garage to exercise his genny and it would only start running after he gave it a shot of starting fluid. at first he thought the carb was gummed up but he always runs it until it runs out of gas in the carb, so we ruled that out, thought it might be the spark plug but it runs OK once you use the starting fluid so we ruled that out. only thing we can figure is the cold is doing it. some motors are just ones that hate to start once it gets cold out.
