Anyone tow with a 04-05 Excursion diesel? Have you had any problems with the 6.0 engine, front end, brakes, electrical, trans, 4x4 system or any other issues? I am looking into buying a low mileage Excursion. Being a 10 yr old truck is there anything I should look out for? Any input would be great! Thank you

I keep seeing this $8K dollar repair mentioned. Do these folks like to throw away money? We have a Ford tech. here that doe's head studs, gaskets, egr and oil coolers for $3500.00.

I warned a friend's wife to avoid this exact vehicle. Two months after purchase it needed $8k in repairs. The initial purchase price and mileage was nice. After the repairs the truck runs good.

lets put it this way, I have an 04 6.0 f350, I had the egr (BPD), Oil cooler studs and headgaskets all done, Additionally the tech did all the latest TSB upgrades to bring it up to the latest specs. Cost $4000, I added the cat ELC coolant, a oil bypass filter as well as a coolant filter.

We were looking for a class c/B+ rv and looked at a couple of the 6.0's which I really wanted, but they did not meet the wifes needs (too small) and one was just plain filthy. Anyhow I know the 6.0 shortcomings but was going to get a rv with one if I could find the right one. We did road tests with my scangauge to see if there were any indications of problems.

So Yes the 6.0 can be problimatic, yes if you can get one that meets your needs at a good price and you are willing to invest money then they can be a good vehicle. However, if you go in blind they can be a killer and also take into account many folks jump on a bandwagon to deride the 6.0. here is a link that you might find interesting and maybe it will help you in your decision.

I had a 2005 6.0 Diesel Ford Excursion. We did love the truck but ended up selling it for more then we paid for it when we decided to get rid of the loan payment.

We got ours up to about 80K miles. I had read all the 6.0 issues and luckily we never had any issues with the egr stuff.

if memory serves me well here is the list of items we fixed: front brakes twice, rear brakes once, alternator, both batteries, and one of the electric computers (FIC?)& oil changes every 5k miles.

Was actually a pretty great rig for us.

Note that a friend of mine has a 2004 Ford 350 with a 6.0 and just ended up with the full egr replacement, new heads, etc.....$8K and he is only around 100k miles. He knew about the 6.0 issues too. It just happens so fast and BOOM!

If you ''need'' a Ford Excursion for the seats I would get either the 7.3 Diesel older ones, the newest V10 4.3 geared one you could find.

Unless you find a really low mile, nice 6.0 Diesel one for a really great price. You are taking a gamble in my viewpoint.

Change the coolant to a non-silicate based coolant, check all the filters, and do not put a tune on it!
Powerstroke Nation has a complete forum for the 6.0 and the other engines. Read it thoroughly! The egr cooler is the big problem, usually being proceeded by leaking head gaskets.....

You couldn't give me an '04 6.0. An '05 is better but I still wouldn't trust it for long trips. Just start scrolling through the threads so get a better about the 6.0 PowerStroke.
