I bought a rebuilt engine from Jasper for $2500. Done the swap myself in the garage. This was in 2017. In June of that year we drove to Alaska, spent over a month exploring the last frontier! Truck ran great, still does. Have put 45K miles on the engine. I like the older body style. I built my own custom flatbed to fit my camper. Works great and have had many people come up and tell me Cool Rig! Have no plans for trading for newer. I am old school, like my truck the same way. To each his own. My younger brother just dropped a wad of cash on a 2020 F350 Platinum. Yikes I don't have that kind of money, this one works for me.Re: Shocks which do you have and why?I seem to be the minority here but I put Monroe Gas Magnums on my last 2 trucks - 99 F250 and 04 F250. Traded backwards and now have a 96 F250 and am in the process of putting Gas Magnums on it. Very satisfied with the performance of these. Just my 2 cents!Re: First time buyerWe own a 1251 and we are very happy with it. We bought new in 2007 and have been all over the USA with it, done some rough roads, and it holds together fine. I have an 04 F250 and am fine with it. The toilet and shower are nice to have. My truck is a super cab, short-bed. If I had to do it again, I would get the same camper. Good luck and Happy hunting.Re: First TC purchase, please adviseWell, I know I am in the minority here but we have had a Bronco 1251 since 2007, have it on a Ford F 250 and it works fine for us. We usually take a 2 week vacation in Sept. with several nights closer to home every summer. It was cheap when we bought it but have stayed over 100 nights in it. The door works fine once on the truck and leveled in the bed. I carry a 2 step ladder to poke in the canvas, never had any problems with it and have been from Maine to Washington, Florida to Montana. I will be the first to admit it is not nearly as nice as a Northstar. I don't need and can't afford the high end things in life, I make do with what I have and Have a good time whenever out on the road..The main thing is to USE it! We have fun no matter where we go. Good luck.Re: Truck camper rig on a budget? We bought a used 99 F-250 in 2007 for $14K, a new Palamino Bronco for $8K and were very satisfied with the combo. The truck had the 5.4 gas, auto trans 4X4 drive train super cab with short bed. We went from Maine to Oregon to Florida in the next six years. We ave about 13 mpg but drive with a light foot and mostly on 2 lane roads at 55mph. I also used the truck on my farm and pulled a trailer with tractors, etc. on it with no problem. Last year we traded trucks as the 99 was getting tired in the engine dept. with 166K miles. Found a pretty good 04 F250 diesel and like the added power in the mountains but for our flat ground in Iowa it is usually not needed, the diesel has higher cost to maintain but does get slightly better mileage. We ave about 14 on vacation now. I haven't weighed the new truck but my old rig weighed about 9K when ready to roll. You don't have to spend a fortune to have a great time in a truck camper but you need to USE it to have fun! Cheers.Re: Alternatives to free standing/perm, attchd shade structure?I put a small dowel in the end of the conduit and placed a wood screw into that with the top of the screw sticking out about 3/4 of an inch, it goes through the grommet and I hook my stake rope over the screw, thereby holding the tarp on the conduit.Re: Alternatives to free standing/perm, attchd shade structure?I took an 8X10 tarp, attached 4 carabiners along the edge in the grommet holes, used 4 eye screws - stainless steel attached to the side of the camper near the top, used 2 lengths conduit for legs and attached a length of rope for tie downs, cost nearly $20 and works fine!Re: How many TCers here?#15 Ready to Roll!Re: What's behind the name? Screen name that is.c for Chester d for Daniel 4e for Forry ac for Allis Chalmers, the farm tractors that I collect.
