We have a dolly like you describe.. The owners manual says NOT to back up as it will damage the dolly. I also says to make sure the front wheels/steering wheel are locked to avoid damaging your toad when turning.

I change my own using the synthetic blend. You can crawl under it without lifting. You don't say what year your chassis is, but mine has grease fittings on the front suspension/axle. Simple to do
