All ActivityMost RecentMost LikesSolutionsRe: 1st 5th wheelGeez some of you crack me up..lol I used to compete with a bow and arrow shooting 3D targets quite a bit and was pretty good with it .I was at a competition one day and a guy walked up and asked me about Dynamic deflection of an arrow and how it effected the arrows flight, he went on to tell me how it wasnt possible for my current bow and arrow combo shouldnt work according to all of his data. I won or placed in the top 3 shooters at any given time , and I assure you when I missed it was almost always because I missread the yardage or wind, and not my equipment. I then politely explained that if you e worried more about actually shooting his bow and using the knowledge he learned from doing so he would get a lot more enjoyment out of the sport . My point here is this , This happy new owner comes on here to share his excitement about his new rig and you guys get into a battle over Dynamic deflection of truck capabilities...lol I know a lot of people that arent capable of driving a passenger car let alone a truck , and some of them retire and buy trailers and all the sudden they are experts on towing and towing capabilities. Dont get me wrong I am not advocating that its a good idea to tow a grossly unreasonable amount of weight no matter what you have , however it doesnt mean that an experienced driver isnt able to safely tow a trailer that exceeds its gvrw . Common sense and experience go along way in this equation . I dont mean to offend anyone , as we all are entitled to our opinions , just wanted this fellow to be able to bask in the glory of his new traler for a minute before controversy spoiled his excitment. Have a good night gentleman....and to the OP congratulations !Re: She didn't like the DRW.Jm , she lived off Red Rock rd in Reno right near Stead Field Airport.Re: She didn't like the DRW.My wife used to live off Red Rock at 395 , so I am very familiar with the area .last time we were there we went to Cabelas there in Verde .And we have shot quite a bit at Sage Hill gun club at Demonte Ranch.Re: She didn't like the DRW.Good deal Jm , I didnt common here to ruffle feathers , and there is always a different way to look at things, glad we can laugh about and agree to disagree, some on here cant .ScottRe: She didn't like the DRW.Jm , that 80 route is no easy pull from Sac to Reno , if thats where you are then you are well informed...lol But I still wouldnt hesitate to use my little srw to go up or down it..haha just pokin some fun , dont take it personal. ScottRe: She didn't like the DRW.Jm,I agree with your last post ,although I dont believe a dually is necessary for the trailer he is looking at , I would agree that he or she could get used to driving whatever they decide to go with as long as they accept some of the limitations on where they can and cannot go with it . I agree that his issues probably wont be solved here . Have a good one . ScottRe: She didn't like the DRW.Yes the op did ask about real world experience from others about srw trucks in his original post . And a large percentage of the folks on here will likely never go up and down grades like we have here in the west .Anyone headed east from San Diego are going up hill for 60 miles before going down Mountain Springs Grade ,the same for folks leaving Phoenix heading north to Flagstaff ,so giving him a perspective about folks going to and from the dunes is about as good as it gets as far as truck capabilities . And yes Heartland does make smaller 5th wheels , just not in the Big Horn family of trailers. As far as the 90 percent comment , it makes a lot more sense than buying a rig based on the fact that you may or may not go to the Rockies some day . Trust me I have been through Wolf Creek pass several times , and it is no joke , but anything that can run up and down some of these other hills will work equally as well there . Have a great eveningRe: She didn't like the DRW.Bill there is no problem towing with a short bed , although you will almost certainly need a slider hitch . Just my opinion , I have had both short and long bed trucks , and for towing the 5th wheel I would not have another short bed . The long bed has room to have a tool box , room for generators ,coolers , fire wood ect. The hitch no matter what kind you get eats up the room in a short bed pretty quick . Both would work but like I said the long bed gives you more flexibility . ScottRe: She didn't like the DRW.Bill , a 1ton srw longbed would be a great choice for the 3010 you are considering and well within the limits of the truck. Great choice in trailers , this combination should serve you well. The next issue and no doubt debate will be which hitch to buy . In my opinion there is only one way to go , and that is air ride . There are two companies to consider that both make nice products Air safe and Trailer Saver . Either of these will provide the best towing experience with minimal impact to the structure of the trailer as well as your truck . Yes they are more expensive than static hitches but the difference is night and day. Once again I am not putting down those with static type hitches , however with all the debates and differences in opinions on a wide variety of things on this as well as other sites , a quick search will show that few if any debate the value of air ride hitches. The reason you dont see more of them is because of the initial expense , however long term there benefits far out weigh there cost.ScottRe: She didn't like the DRW.People need to look at there lifestyle as well as the weight of there trailer when trying to determine which truck will best suit there way of life. As an example , I like to hunt birds in the desert of Ca and Az and a drw is useless in the sand , and in the spring and fall we like to trout fish and often end up on narrow forest service roads where a dually doesnt fit , between that and the day to day driving in town a dually isnt ideal , in contrast if a guy is going to tow a trailer and spend alot of time traveling on the interstate , then a dually may be the best way to go . My point is that the decision to get a drw or srw isnt black and white , and other things should factor into this decision.
