Adirondacks Crown Point to Wilmington NY Low Clearances

Hi folks,

I'm hoping someone can provide details on getting from Crown Point NY to Wilmington NY (north of Lake Placid, near Whiteface Mt). The Good Sam trip planner says 10'9" clearance under the Amtrak line on route 9N just west of Westport NY. Any easy way around that to get to Wilmington via 9N since this would be a more direct route?

Also, there's a 12'9" on the I-87/Rt 9 interchange that would provide a more direct route via 73. (I have to double check my Crusader height when the cover comes off, specs say 11'6" but not sure if that is w/ or w/o the single rear AC unit). Any issues with this one?

Thanks in advance for help with this summer 2016 trip planning. I didn't find anything in a forum search but may have missed it if previously addressed.

Thanks for the pic link Adirondack Jack. That does look low, but we'll have to see once we get our rig measured again. Worst case we'll go up to Elizabeth town as you noted. Thanks for your time in giving a first-hand perspective.

Happy travelling!

P.S. we are expecting our Motor Carriers atlas soon per WCW's suggestion.

We travel that route to a doctor in Port Henry. It's a normal, country black-top road and you should have no problem. If the overpass height looks too close for comfort just hop on I-87 North to the Elizabethtown Exit and connect with 73 from there. Also a very good and scenic roadway. I have a photo of that overpass on Pinterest at https://www.pinterest.com/pin/368098969516860604/.

Thanks for both suggestions. AdirondackJack, it looks like you're suggesting County Rt 4 Port Henry to Moriah Center, then 70 to Witherbee, then 6 over to the I-87/Rt 9 interchange. Are these county routes good for a 5er and did you have any issues at the I87/Rt 9 interchange? It looks like our rig size is similar to yours.

We spend Summers in that area. Both overpasses are marked correctly. 73 is the way to go if you are under the 12'9" limit. I'd take 9N to Port Henry and then turn West through Moriah Center and Witherbee over to Rte 9 and then 73. 73 is a beautiful, scenic road through some of the High Peaks. If you can't fit then take the Mineville route up through Elizabethtown to connect with 73.

Go buy a Rand McNally Motor Carriers Atlas, and it will shows all low clearance, and restricted roads all acorss the U.S. Bear in mind if coming up on a height clearance sign in New York State, that the ACTUAL height will be 1 foot HIGHER then marked on the sign, UNLESS there's a 2nd sign on the post saying "ACTUAL".
