Michigan is progressive in assisting it’s citizens, Sidecar. California is not.

Passport card or regular passport is required to get back into the USA.

...or enhanced driver's license, or NEXUS card, or a few other more esoteric options.

From this page from the US Customs and Border Patrol website:

What types of documents are accepted for entry into the United States via land and sea?

  • U.S. citizens can present a valid: U.S. Passport; Passport Card; Enhanced Driver’s License; Trusted Traveler Program card (NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST); U.S. Military identification card when traveling on official orders; U.S. Merchant Mariner document when traveling in conjunction with official maritime business; or Form I-872 American Indian Card, or (when available) Enhanced Tribal Card.

  • U.S. and Canadian citizen children under the age of 16 (or under 19, if traveling with a school, religious group, or other youth group) need only present a birth certificate or other proof of citizenship. The birth certificate can be original, photocopy, or certified copy.

"Enhanced Driver's License, if one is fortunate enough to be from a state that issues them"

We are stalling on those here in California unfortunately. Gee, kinda like the Feds on new MediCare cards without Social Security numbers.

The Enhanced Driver's License, if one is fortunate enough to be from a state that issues them, is valid for land (and sea) travel into and out of Canada in lieu of a passport. It won't--or, at any rate, shouldn't--cause any difficulties at border crossings.

One thing to consider is that, should an emergency of some sort come up, it will be rather more of a hassle to fly back from Canada without an actual passport.
