Leaving this week from Coos Bay for Yuma towing a 35 foot 5th wheel. Here's the route we are considering: Coos Bay, OR to Calpella, CA on US 101 Calpella to Williams on CA 20 Williams to Sacramento on I-5 Sacramento to Bakersfield on CA 99 Bakersfield to Barstow on CA 58 Barstow to Jct CA 95 on I-40 Jct CA 95 to Yuma on CA (US) 95
Any comments on the above route would be welcome. TIA
California gas prices are higher than the national average by about 56 cents a gallon and going to get higher with a 12 cent a gallon tax increase on 11/1/2017. Along with the 55 mph towing speed limit makes me want to avoid California if at all possible.

I think you mean 58 to I-40. I like that route also but it is just as long as taking the Google alternate route. Google has an alternate of getting off of I-5 around Mt Shasta and picking up 395 in Susanville and following it down to US 95 near Reno and taking 95 to Yuma.
I agree to take 58 over Tehachapi but I prefer to turn off at Kramer Junction and take 395 down to I-15 to 210 to I-10 to Indio and then 86 or 111 to I-8. You skirt LA on the east but I have never had bad traffic going that way. Heavy at times but not stop and go unless there is an accident and you can get that on any route.
We were on 58 once and they closed the road between Kramer Junction and Barstow completely. Had to detour south 20 miles to turn back east.
