Exit 27 on I-40 west of Asheville onto Hwy74/19 to Hwy23 to Clayton to Hwy76 to Hwy17 to Hwy180 to Vogel St Pk. Or go further west--like Hwy64 west out of Franklin to Hwy17 ?
Coming back over to Helen then Hwy17 to Hwy23 to Tallulah Falls, then back to Clayton to Asheville on same route.
Don't mine back roads, seems like that is only route this direction. Did NC waterfalls couple years ago. Been on 64 from Brevard to Franklin, wasn't that bad except from Highlands to Franklin (think that is where it was). Won't do that section again. Thanks for your help.

I travel that way often, 40 to 64/74 to Murphy, south on 19/129 to Blairsville,129 S to Vogel. It's about 165 miles from Ashville. I live about eight mile from the Park. Except for about 15 miles through the gorge it's four lane.

If you are used to driving the roads of the southern Appalachians you'll have no problems. Clayton to 17 is curvy and has steep grades making for slower speeds and lots of work on the steering wheel, brakes and accelerator- but no show stoppers. But as you know the southern Apps and the Blue Ridge are awesome making it all worth it!

180 is fine. (but don't do Brasstown Bald in an RV)

Agree its not as bad as 64--- but heck it is the mountains! 19 or 17 into Helen can be curvy and steep also. I did them last week in our 38 foot gasser towing the dolly and toad. We survived but not going back for a dose for a few more weeks ๐Ÿ™‚

If you need groceries or fuel before going in to Vogel you may want to stop in at the Ingles in Hiawassee.

Since you have done 64 from Cashiers to Franklin, you've done the worst in the area. They are all nice back roads once you get off the dual lane.
