OK, I am familiar with the route though Amarillo and may well decide to take that route. However, I thought I'd check on the alternate routes to see if anyone here has recent personal experience.
1> Through Fort Sumner, NM: TX 86 to US 60 to US 84 at Fort Sumner
I have made this route and remember that US 84 from Fort Sumner to Santa Rosa was a roller coaster for my fifth-wheel.
2> TX 86 to FM 1058 becomes NM 241 -> NM 209 -> NM 156 to US 84.
Towing a 34' fifth-wheel, 25 years experience in New Mexico and Colorado towing. Only seeking personal experience on these specific routes.
