We live near there. Seems like there's a shut down all the time on one of the roads on TV. Daughter lives there. We were at Carrowinds a few weeks ago (south of CLT on 77) and I asked that question of them re going north on 77 to VA. They said definitely go around by the airport. Be advised that no matter time of day 77 is a huge mess north of where 485 comes back in. Not much you can do about it except chill. If going 77 into WV there is another YUGE backup north of the VA/WV border. Again, all you can do is chill.
