Where will you be coming from? Good way to avoid the Baltimore/DC/Richmond I 95 mess going North/South is to pick up U S 301. There are several decent privately owned CGs along that highway. I might be able to be of more help if I knew your itinerary. We traveled North/South from NJ to Myrtle Beach many, many times. We now live in the Northern Neck area of Va, and are familiar with the 301/17/I95 area.

Look at the dcr website for the state parks and work your way south using them. Another possibility you may like would be crossing the Chesapeake bay by Annapolis Maryland, and then visiting assateague national seashore and Chincoteague wildlife refuge and then continuing south on US 13 and taking the Chesapeake Bay bridge tunnel. A 24 mile water crossing.

If you are trying to avoid interstates, and coming south from west of DC look at highway 29 from west of F'burg all the way down to NC or the same can be said of rt 15 which crosses into NC at Kerr Reservoir which has some nice COE parks as well as State parks.
Using the State park website you will find a lot of nice state parks just west of Richmond.

17 does have a couple campgrounds well south of Fredericksburg one is a thousand trails below Tappahannock, it packs the trailers in tight, went once never went back.
If you are eligible for Military base access Champs Campis also outthere.

Thank you for your information. I was trying to get something to avoid I-95 or I-81 going south as much as possible, but there appears to be very little in good campgrounds in the middle of VA. going south.

I cant say for immediately around Fredericksburg, but about 50 miles south at Kings Dominion (Doswell Va) is a decently rated KOA, pricey for me at about $80 a night, 20 miles farther south in Ashland Va is an Americamps, right by the Interstate, easy on and off, about $60
Or if you are in no rush, Lake Anna State Park, 40 miles south of F'burg but not right along I-95.
Nice sites, w&e around $40.
Lake Anna Stete Park

These are all off of 95, not along 17

East of 17 40 miles south of F'burg is SWestmoreland Stete Park, I have not been there so cant say anything about sites.
