Taking our first long trip in our new (to us) Class A. Just curious what is the best route or most popular to take. Not looking for anything scenic just best roads most expedient route. Laying over at Wal-Mart so where to stay is not an issue. Thanks.

Been there done that for a living for a long time...... If you're not looking at sight seeing.....I 10 to Quartzsite, AZ 95 up to I 40W to 58W to 99N at Bakersfield 46 W at Wasco, CA to I 5N to I 580W to The Oakland-Bay bridge and into SF. There are a few other ways from I 580 but this is as good as any

That is the way with the least traffic and fastest but California is packed full of traffic every where. Good Luck.
He's going to HMB but yes 580, 92 is another route.

BTW OP Stop at Rite Aid in Pacifica for ice cream cones, from there take the first right across US 1 and watch the surfers while enjoying the ice cream cone.

Plaza Gas on 101 1 mile south of 152 usually has lower prices than much of the bay area.

X2 on CA Traveler's route. Have made the trip many times back & forth to Phoenix. We drive down from SF to Ketch Joann's for lunch 2 or 3 time a month. Fresh seafood right off the boats.

Then: 40, 58, 99, 46, 5, 152, 101, 85, 280, 92 to HMB. We like Ketch Joann's restaurant at the harbor, not real fancy.

Yeah we understand about the Wal-Marts. Also we already have reservations. We are leaving late September to visit our son who recently moved there. Staying at a place in Half Moon Bay. Can't really remember the name of it. Wife handles all the reservations. I was thinking about going the North Texas route through Amarillo just because it may be cooler weather wise. Any thoughts on that? Really appreciate the tips thus far.

I've taken 10, 210, 5 mid day through LA many times with only minor delays. Rush hour is another story.

101 is more scenic and slower than 5 headed north. Bay area roads are also best mid day.

no matter which route you take, get a hard copy of route you choose to follow.
it is great to look at pictures of where you are

just like the rest, I would not go near LA.
not sure when you are going, but check for fires on route

Yes LA traffic is bad. Take I-40 towrard lake havasu to the 15 cross through the 138 to the 14. The 14 will take you to i5. The i5 will take you all the way up, its long and boring. From i5 near magic moutain you can also cross through the 126 through and take the 101 at Ventura. Its a way nicer drive than the 5. You can take the 101 all the way up to the PCH1 through morro bay, big sur, monterey.

Depending on your plans in S.F. and your RV accommodations, you should make reservations at RV
parks now. Not all Wal-mart stores allow RVers to stay overnight anymore. I would call any Wall Mart you plan on staying at now to avoid any surprises.

I have heard to avoid LA at all cost. Any truth?

ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!!! I will not drive any where within 50 miles close to L.A. Traffic and people driving in L.A. are dangerious and nuts!!! Either take 110 to I-5 then north or I-10 to I-15 north to Hwy. 58 and then drop into Bakersfield then take Hwy 46 over to I-5 then north to S.F.

you could take i10 all the way to i5
or i10 toward LA but go north to 210 and take that to i5

or I 10 but head up to lake Havasu and then i40 over to Bakersfield then North i5 to 580 over to San Fran

we have gone the Havasu route a few times from Sacramento, pretty Easy, but can get windy.
LA is a pain imop
have a good trip
what are your plans for San Francisco, be careful driving that big rig around
