Lake Lanier, GA to Asheville, NC

Just wondering about using Highway 23 through northern Ga up to Asheville...any big climbs or descents? We're a 34' Class A with tow dolly. Is there a different rots that would be better? We try to avoid interstates whenever possible.

Also, would love recommendations for campgrounds along the way. We have about 5 days to do this part of the trip. We keep hearing wonderful things about seeing this part of Georgia.

Thanks for your help and advice.

There is going to be another decent climb about 10 miles from I-40 as you go across the gap at the Blue Ridge Parkway.

This hill and the one Ivylog mentioned isn't any worse than Saluda grade you will have to deal with if you take the I-85 and I-26 route.

If you don't like interstates and don't mind a few curves, 23 is a very good alternative.

Other than a pretty good climb north of Franklin it's a good route with much of it four lanes. Moccasin Creek SP west of Clayton is on Lake Burton... one of the prettiest lakes in the East. There is a Trout Hatchery next door and you should be able to rent a boat at LaPrade's Marina a couple miles further south on 197. A 30 mile side trip in the car to Brasstown Bald... GA's highest hill at almost 5,000' on a clear day is worth the trip... 76 west to 17 south and 180 west.

North of Dillard on 246 is River Vista RV Park and the Dillard House is a good family style place to eat and lunch is more reasonable... Oh wait, you are from CA $$$$.
Black Rock Mountain SP at Mtn City is worth a visit in the car while in this area.
