One of the worlds largest airports was announced today and it will be in Mexico City, well close to Mexico City about 30 miles away. It is an incredible design and once completed looks like a place I would want to see in person. Take a look here.

The new airport is located on land owned by the Federal Government. The exact location was printed on newspapers in Mexico but it is with a few miles of the existing airport.
This is a long time project coming into construction with land and design being years old in the making. Decades long planning if you have been following along that long.
I have no doubt it will break ground soon, as planned. There will be demonstrations from the neighboring villages and farmers but that has been factored in also.
The interesting and somewhat amazing part is, Nieto once again has lead the way to growth.

I always liked flying into MMMX. Bleachers for the locals to watch, subway station at the airport which goes everywhere for a peso. Great scenery on the one clear day per year. Very convienient, unlike the airports far from a city such as Denver, Cabo, Puerto Penasco etc.

I thought it would be interesting to learn more about this. Not that it is about RVing but it is about Mexico and some of us may need an airport from time to time. So I did some Googling and came up with more stories related to this. Some of the info conflicts with other info. And as you might guess – there is a Carlos Slim connection. There are also questions about whether it will actually be built – protests have begun and some experts say the ground is too soft (among other reasons). I made a wild guess about where it might be based on what some article said and came up with some Lat Lon numbers below – I have no idea if these numbers are even close but it does appear to be open land – and might be flat – and a now dry former lake bed (which might get wet again?) about 6 miles ENE of the old airport.

Maybe 19.488318 -98.990371 to maybe 19.497534 -98.957072 or somewhere in that area on Google Earth.

Some web address for those who do not like to click on unknown links……… if nothing else there are some great concept pictures.

This does look amazing. Is this meant to replace the existing Mexico city international airport? There are over 98 gates there- these renditions sure don't show anywhere near that many. How can this work?
