What is the best route to Edinburg, tx hwy 281 or I35 looking for less hill`s, less curves and quality of the hwy. Do hwy 281 skirt the large cities or go though them? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

We use 281 for all our trips from SA to Denton for family visits. Yes, it is a bit longer but more pleasant that I35. Recommendations, good reasonable diesel prices in Stephenville along with GREAT BBQ at Hard 8 with good RV parking. Some of the small towns have really high diesel/gas prices so choose carefully--Hamilton is one city with high prices.

I would take I-44 to Wichita Falls and then 281. Austin is my least favorite city (less than Dallas, Houston, Atlanta) to drive through. I might ever take TX 36 and US 190 over to US 77 to avoid both Austin and San Antonio.

We just got back from the Valley last week. Came up 77 to Waco, but from 281 you would take the route above if you want to get over to 77.

I have stayed at Travelers World. It is a nice RV park, but it is about $50/night and not particularly convenient to the highway. Check rvparkreviews.com for local RV parks. I know there are some off I-37 just south of San Antonio. But have not stayed at any of them.

There are also some military base RV parks there is you are active or retired military.

According to google maps, it is 26 miles and 35 minutes longer via 281. Neither highway has a lot of hills and curves of any real significance. 281 goes thru a lot of smaller towns with traffic lights and reduced speed limits. But it does bypass Austin, which can be slow on I-35 sometimes. And of course, I-35W goes thru Ft Worth which can also be slow at times. I-35 is a very good highway with much of it newly reconstructed. BUT. There is still significant construction going on from Temple northward for about 25 miles. But even much of that is already on new pavement. They do a very good job of keeping the traffic moving thru there.

Both are good highways, and time and mileage difference is not significant. Just a matter of preference.

It normally starts around 530-6 am and goes till around 830-9. Unless there is an accident on I35 (normally a semi) and the everything is a stand still for several hours. Had a rollover one morning and 35 was closed for around 8 hours while they cleaned everything up. A lot of people here talk about Traveler's World RV Resort which is off of Roosevelt Ave. on the South side

281 and 35 both go through San Antonio and depending on the time of day they both slow down to about 10mph during rush hour. In the mornings it's heading South on both. in the evenings it's heading North on both that is slow. I35 is where most of the semi's run, 281 is home owners trying to get to work or home.
