Hello Everyone,
We are new and planning a trip from Orlando to Las Vegas. I have two questions: 1. What is the best route to take? 2. How many hours per day is a good driving time.

I-20 to I-30 around Dallas then 287 to Amarillo to I-40

Sea Level Ram is correct about this. I-20 loops south of Dallas and is much better than taking I-30 through town.

For my part, I take a wider berth around DFW. I get up to US 82 at either Paris, TX or Sherman, TX. You have to go up that far north to avoid the congestion in the routes around the Metraplex.

Just to give an example of this strategy: you could take US 69 near Tyler all the way to US 82 at Bells near Sherman. US 82 will merge with US 287 at Henrietta, TX and on to Wichita Falls.

But, if you want to go via Dallas, stay on I-20.

When I did a driving direction from Good Sam and MapQuest here is the way I was routed. I-10 to Mobile, AL, then 84 to Jackson, MS, I-20 to I-30 around Dallas then 287 to Amarillo to I-40 through Albuquerque then 93 to Vegas. Not sure why they are routing me this way any ideas.

Just got home from a trip to Salt Lake City, where we go often to see family.
This is the route we take as far as Amarillo, then head north from there.
Looks like a good way to go to Vegas. Have been that way also.
A week seems generous to me, but everyone is different.
Only change I would make is go I-20 all the way to 287 North, and go through Fort Worth instead of Dallas.

You're going to get answers all over the board on how long to drive in one day. Back when I was 19 and in the Air Force I drove from Wichita Falls, Texas, to Sacramento, California in one straight shot in less than 30 hours. You won't see me do that now. A few years back we went from Central California to Oshkosh Wisconsin in the Class A with a toad. I left the first night after work on Thursday. We did about 250 miles that day and stopped just the other side of Reno. On Friday and Saturday I did over 700 miles each day. On Sunday we did the last 400 or so miles and got into Oshkosh in early evening. That was about 2200 miles in basically a three day weekend. Your trip from Orlando to Vegas is only 200 miles further. So you can do it in three days at the rate I did it. But you'll have people on here tell you they drive 200 miles a day max. It all depends on what you can handle.

GKU- we did many miles per day when we went but we had some friends that went with us that only had a week of vacation.

We have family in California and we have also drove the way you mention. I think the way you have might be shorter distance but you end up going through more city driving instead of interstate speed. Also, depending when you are going, that route will take you in higher elevations and might have weather concerns.

If you have not driven through west Texas on I10, there isn't much out there.

GKU-I'm right by you (Debary) and we made that trip a couple years ago. We didn't take the RV on that trip but we went I10 Just as DaveG39 mentioned.

We stopped at the following:
Carlsbad Caverns
Sedona
Grand Canyon
Vegas
Monument Valley
Moab Utah
Denver
St Louis (BBQ)
Kansas City (BBQ)
Elvis' house
Gatlinburg

The only difference, we did that in a week.

We have one week to get to Las Vegas and 2-3 weeks for the return trip. While in vegas we are going to see Grand Canyon, Hovers Dam, so we like to see those sort of things.

Hours per day is a personal decision based on your abilities and desires. Sightseeing on the way back is also a personal decision. Something that interests me might be totally boring to you. Maybe if you posted your interests folks might be able to point you to relevant sights.

How much time do you have for the return trip? That will determine what we can offer for sights on the return trip. I would recommend I-10 to Blythe, CA then 95 to Las Vegas.

Are you trying to get there ASAP? Are you looking for shorted route or do you have some time to take in some sights?
