The during the war of 1812 a British Ship sailed in to Fort Astoria and ceased it from the Americans on Xmas eve, by gun point. :E
The peace treaty after the war between the US and the Britain said that anything taken by forces during the conflict must be returned. 🙂
So because that goof ball British officer used a gun and we being the polite people we are up here in the north land , we gave it all back. :S
It should be noted that when they arrived at the compound at Fort Astoria the HBC men were all liquored up with there counterparts from Fort Astoria , a few bottles of rum would most likely won the battle of Astoria if he just had of looked around a bit before he pointed the gun. :B

The fight was over the territory north of 42 degrees - Britain backed of to the current 49 degrees but not to 54.40 as the Americans wanted.

Sorry, I can't resist the opportunity to show off my slight knowledge of history. The only time Canada was under attack by foreign troops was in 1812 and the attack came from the USA. We've fought on the same side ever since, the US missing the first couple of years of the two world wars and Canada missing Vietnam and the second Iraq war.

Lonnie, I love and trust your true stories. I had heard all you needed were your hands and a willow switch. LOL

The article that Francisca posted about the Valdez boat captain turned out fairly well for Captain Fred, as I understand it. He not only could have gone to jail for up to 3 years but could have lost his captain's license to run his charter boat. His situation was that the boat, the LULU Belle is their year round home, they are full time boat people. Summers in Valdez where they run their charter service and them Washington for the winter. I called up and talked to Captian Fred not long after the incident occurred as I was trying to see if he was still going to run his charter business. He was very embarrassed by the situation. This was probably just the first time he got caught with the hand guns on board in Canadian waters, due to his grounding the boat and having to call the coast guard.

Not sure either what this had to do with the person being retired military. All he had to do was when asked the first time, tell the truth. They would either turned him around and sent him back to the US or they would have confiscated it. Either way would have been a lot better and cheaper than trying to lie his way out of the mess. The $2,500 fine could have replaced his hand gun several times over if they had confiscated it.

I have taken hand guns through and into Canada numerous times over the 52 years I have been driving the Alaska Highway. And all those times are on my information screen at customs. The US border patrol heading into Haines, Alaska had the fully armed swat team come out and stand at the four corners of my RV while I talked to the agent at my window. After a few minutes, they all got some message over their ear pieces from someone inside the building and all stood down and returned inside. Thought my wife was going to stop traveling with me after that incident. LOL

Just be honest, keep your answers to the question and don't elaborate. If they want to know more, they will ask, you can be assured. The worst that is going to happen if you make an honest mistake is you might lose some item, food product, might end up being fined, turned back from the border or have to pay a duty on the product, if over the limit.

I am a gun owner, have a concealed carry permit and travel extensively. We visit Canada annually, and when we do, we obey the laws of Canada. My weapons stay at home if my trip is going to take me into Canada. Their country, their laws.
Anyway, as a combat veteran and an enrolled member of the Comanche Tribe, I can easily fight off a Grizzly bear with my bear hands and a pocket knife.

For about ten seconds...
I then call on SWMBO and she takes care of the rest.

He is lucky it happened in Canada. If it were in Mexico, he most likely would be sitting in a jail cell right now, appealing to everyone for help.

I respect all active, honorably discharged and retired military men and women, but being in the military doesn't give them a free pass to lie or break the laws.

I would like to point out that if a Canadian lied twice to as US border official about having weapons when entering the US then a $2500 fine would be the best one could hope for!! Yes, US Border Services officers ask that question too.

Please keep in mind that the laws regarding importing weapons into the US are almost identical to the laws regarding importation into Canada. A Canadian cannot bring a handgun along on a trip to the US, with some exceptions for police officers on official business etc.

Hey -- guess what?? Turns out that US officials don't want visitors to that country bringing weapons with them neither. Go figure!

This guy got off easy. Lucky he didn't get sentenced to jail time.

But we are all human. People can forget things, and panic. I once forgot to take a fillet knife out of my carry-on bag before boarding. Didn't remember until I was at my destination; the screener never caught it! (Whew!) I mailed that knife back home before boarding again, and thanked the Lord for whatever angel covered that TSA worker's eyes when my bag went through X-ray.

But hey, are AF sergeants considered "officers"? In the Army, sergeants will tell you they are not officers because sergeants work for a living. 😉

I don't get what his being a "retired military man" has to do with anything. The Judge even commented on his unblemished record and was almost apologetic about imposing what to me sounds like a perfectly appropriate penalty, assuming Canada expects people to take its laws seriously. The offender's lucky he didn't go before some Judge that might have taken the opposite view, perhaps perceiving that someone who achieved officer's rank during 24 years in the military ought to know better than anyone how important it is to abide by such rules.

And if anyone's interested in how bad things could have been in this case, take a gander at Fred Rodolf's story from 2011.
A 72 year old sailboat captain that also "forgot" he had guns aboard when he docked in Canada finds himself charged with enough crimes to land him in JAIL for three years!
