Route from Corning CA to Reno

Looking for a little different route home this year and have wanted to stay at Rolling Hills in Corning as I've heard much about it.

So, I really don't want to go any further south on I-5 and need to get over to 395 and thought about heading east on South Ave over to hwy 99 and then down to Yuba City and then Hwy 20 over to Grass Valley and then on to I-80 to Reno and 395.

Is this a good route for my rig (see signature)?

Well, we opted for the 99-20-I80-395 route. However, once in Yuba City, I somehow made a wrong turn (or didn't turn...not sure which)and lost hwy 20 and wound up in 65. Turned out ok as 65 was a nice drive and connected to I-80 without any fan fare. Did miss going through Grass Valley and Nevada City....oh well.

After hearing all the horror stories about I-80, I was very hesitant to take it. But I gotta say, it wasn't bad at all. Beautiful drive.

That said, doubt if we will do it again. Try something else out next year.

Yeah, thanks...but we've been most of that route several times before and as I said in the beginning, we're looking for a different route. We're coming from Oregon, so I really don't want to back track, and I REALLY don't want to go any further down I-5 than Corning. Wouldn't even be going this far if we weren't going to Rolling Hills.

We did I-5 clear down to Bakersfield last year, and we'll never do that again!!

Thanks to all, but I'm looking more to the 99-20-I80-395 route....at least this time. Who knows which way we'll go next year.

I would go back north to Red Bluff(about 15 miles) and go out 36 to 395 almost at Susanville. Then it is a straight shot to Reno with very little traffic.

Yes, it's supposedly only 12'6", but I've added vent covers that raise that a little plus I have two antennas that are close to 14'.

The problem here is that the top of the tunnel is curved so that if I have to drive on the right side, the ceiling will be much lower. To be safe, I would have to drive down the middle of the tunnel and that's probably not a good idea.

I think I'm back to taking 20 over to Grass Valley then over to I-80.

Oh well...thanks anyway.

I just googled it and found it HERE. The sign at the entrance says 14'6", but down below in the specs it says 14'.

Is this NOT on hwy 70?

Where are you getting your info. Its not on the under 14' list for CA highways. I've been up to Portola several times and don't remember any clearance issues.

CA highway 70 runs into 395 at Halleluiah Junction should show on the CA map. Yes you are going north and east from where you would leave highway 99. Dick
