Southbound Hwy 1 San Francisco report

A few weeks ago, I asked how difficult it would be to take Hwy 1 south from the Golden Gate until it turns to the 280 freeway in a 36 foot Super C with a car on a tow dolly. Piece of cake at 10:00am on Sunday two days before Christmas. The two miles after leaving the bridge Hwy 1/19th street is two lanes wide, mostly straight but no shoulder in the tunnel under the Presidio. There is no height restriction in the tunnel even in the right lane. The next 5 miles to the interstate is a three lane city street with many traffic lights and no left turn lanes. Stay in the center lane and there is no problem for anyone towing of any length. There is a gentle 90 degree right and then a left bend to navigate but easy to stay in your lane. Again, the road I was concerned with was the easy part. The traffic going north was backed up light to light for miles on a quiet Sunday. I was never more than 6 cars back from any of the lights and would hit 2 of 3 in a row on green. But my neighbor said his last time towing saw people on the sidewalk going much faster for the almost two hours if took him to go the same 7 miles. So, for what it’s worth the route is OK but the traffic and time of day will make all of the difference in your decision. Hope your trip is as good as ours was.

We've taken that route mid day many times both directions with no problems.

It was a one-time drive for me. Glad I did it some years ago. My Dad disliked any driving in SF, so I did it and enjoyed it!
