A Month in Brownsville TX, Jan 2021??

We usually head down to Key West for about a month during the winter. Unfortunately, the CG we usually stay at is closed indefinitely due to Covid.

Considering spending a month in Brownsville TX instead. Temps appear relatively warm in Jan (similar to Key West). Quite a few RV campgrounds and resorts in the area with reasonable pricing. Called some of them---seems to be good availability.

We've visited Mustang Island (near Corpus Christi) in the past. Is South Padre Island similar?

Thoughts? Comments?

Thanks!

Thanks, PawPaw_n_Gram! Very helpful info, much appreciated! You obviously know the area well. We're very much open to staying anywhere in the general Brownsville metro area. Will definitely give Harlingen and San Benito a closer look. Thanks again.

Brownsville will have somewhat cooler weather at times than Key West. There seems to be a straight path from the Canadian border to Texas, and some can even get that far south. Almost never down to freezing. Also potentially wetter.

Personally I'd prefer Harlingen or San Benito to Brownsville, but we have also stayed in La Feria, Weslaco and Alamo. All great places to stay.

I prefer a gated community. Not really worried about crime anymore than say Miami or Dallas.

Personally, I find South Padre better than Mustang Island.

If you like fishing, get close to the coast. Also SpaceX at Boca Chica is very active now with testing their next generation Starship.

Some amazing wildlife refuge, birding state parks and other natural areas in the stretch along the border.

We do our dental work in Nuevo Progresso, never worried about crossing the border there.

bhum, thx. Crime was something we were concerned about. Haven't read anything that says this area is any worse than average. Good to hear the fishin's good.

padredw, thx, nice to know there are places to consider all the way west to Mission. Might also spend some time inland for some variety. At this point, we're leaning towards Brownsville for most of our stay. It's closer to the coast---wanted to get in some fishin' while we're there.

Good fishing. Just across the border of what was/is the toughest town in Mexico. Was there years ago and it didn't seem to deserve that reputation.
