Stay at Ruby's RV Park just outside the gate. Often there is a bus that runs in and out several times a day, or take the toad. Nice thing about the bus is it takes you directly to the best stopping location, and using the toad you might be in a huge parking lot.
A lot depends on you, how far you want to walk or hike. We did a large 6 mile hike years ago that took us deep inside and the scenery was amazing. Ruby's people took us to the first park hiking spot down Fairyland Road, and then we took the bus back out from a big parking lot.
