Hey all I am starting to plan my families trim to Mt. Rushmore next year. I will be leaving Salt Lake heading up to Custer. I am looking for a good place to overnight on the way. I was looking for someplace around Custer/Cheyenne? I do not need fancy just a place to park and relax for a while; I just do not want to be in a parking lot. Does anyone have experience with any of the camping around these areas? Boon docking is even ok.
Thanks Matt

We stopped overnight both coming and going to the Tetons at Rivers Edge RV park in Evansville, WY this fall. Very clean, reasonably priced and convenient to the interstate. Should be a good intermediate stop for you. have fun.
With an 8yr oal and a 3 yr old I do not know how much truck time they can take, even with all the in car entertainment. I am pretty easy going and good on the long drives. I have just never done a trip like this before that is over a one day drive with a TT. Thanks for all the input please keep it coming.

We generally stay at the Air Base in Cheyenne but Curt Gowdy St Park is west and pretty good, no hook ups as I remember and there is a City or county park that we stayed at one time on the west side by a stream can't remember the name of the little town but it was free. Two years ago we stayed East of town about 40 miles and there is a nice plain campground (used to be a KOA but now has another designation and fair price right off the interstate. Lots of choices in the area.

I guess you are heading up through Rawlins? There are a few places that are not very fancy around Rawlins that would work, but a bunch of open country between there an Custer. Interesting area, but sorta boring if you are in a hurry to get to the B Hills

in cheyenne I stayed at the KOA. folks here fussed cause the town ordinance forbid blacktop boondocking and they blamed KOA. another local campground was more money and not as nice. bumpy
We were in South Dakota this summer but our route was from Los Angeles to Flagstaff Az.to Chama NM then Estes Park Co. Grand Lake Co. and finally to South Dakota In South Dakota we stayed at Rafter J Ranch. A little pricey but we loved that campground lots and lots of room. To me it was worth the money best private park around the area.
At Chugwater, WY, north of Cheyenne, on I 25, there is a nice little highway rest stop. Further north, at the intersection of I 25 and highway 18, there is another rest stop, also nice, but the Chugwater one has a more level parking area.
