Lockett Meadows

I would like to camp for a few days at Lockett Meadows, north-west of Flagstaff, but the web site says it is not recommended for rv's and trailers because of the narrow road. A few years ago, when I had a 25 ft. class C, I managed to make it without too much trouble. I now have a 31 ft,. Class C. Has anyone on this forum camped up there lately? Have the road conditions changed/worsened? I think if I take it easy, I can make it up there.

I was able to drive up to Lockett Meadows in mid June. I was a little disappointed. The meadow looks quite different now. They allowed a bunch of pine trees to grow in the meadow, obstructing the beautiful view. The meadows is nonetheless a beautiful place, with some tall, gorgeous Aspen trees. The drive up there was precarious to say the least, since the road is only wide enough for a single vehicle to traverse.

When I was there around 1997, during the summer time, I did not see a single other vehicle going there. There were only about three other campers. It was super quiet. It thus far has been the best camping spot I have ever found. I do not have a toad, and would need to make it all the way up there in my class C. I believe it was at most a couple of miles to the summit and was not something that could not be negotiated. I think I will give it a try. As long as there is no snow, it is doable.

Let us know how it goes..inquiring minds want to know! We'll be in Flagstaff (Ft. Tuthill USAF Rec Center)in late July, so if we don't hear anything then we'll assume it went well. Wish I was in Lockett Meadow right now, as a matter of fact!

The hike up to the Inner Basin (caldera of the huge volcano) is really worth the effort, if you haven't done it before. The trailhead is at the far end of the Lockett Meadow CG.

I wanted to go there a few years ago. I am quite experienced with narrow steep roads, chose a Tuesday morning to minimize possible traffic, and found swarms of apparent locals zipping around in little Subarus not knowing or caring about the policy that uphill traffic has the right-of-way. I hate to think what it might have been like on a busy weekend!

I was NOT having fun, turned around and went down to Bonito campground. Lockett Meadows is said to be a wonderful place, but I guess it was not meant to be my place.

I have camped up there with a tent. The road is pretty narrow in places. A very small Class C might work, but you might be better advised setting up camp at the Bonito Campground near Sunset Crater and daytripping up to Lockett Meadow in something smaller

Most folks take the road on the East side of HWY89 and go for the SUNSET CRATER sites and scenic views... They don't know what they are missing not visiting LOCKETT MEADOWS...

Haven't been there since the Mid 70s when we lived in Tempe AZ and was in my Jeep pulling a utility trailer with TENT CAMPING supplies back then. Thanks for jogging the memories of camping out at LOCKETT MEADOWS...
My Posts are IMHO based on my experiences - Words in CAPS does not mean I am shouting
