We camped in the Asheville area over the 4th and our final idea was to go to a rodeo (DW had never been).
What we witnessed was more than a rodeo. I was a heart warming event for us to see families with well mannered children dressed in red, white and blue. Patriotism on display with no hint of bias, racism or seemingly, even a care about anything but their family and their town. Made me envious to see such a great group of people with obvious close ties to their neighbors.
What we also saw was a rodeo, probably small by most standards but it was terrific. They had it all. barrel racing, cattle roping, and bull riding. Even the clown had me laughing out loud.
In the end, they had a fireworks display. They were outstanding. I am guessing 20 minutes of beautiful fireworks on display.
And all this for $12 bucks.
Maybe I am getting soft in my old age but after seeing so much hatred, violence and lack of respect for our heritage, it was refreshing to see that there are those out there maintaining a simple life with core values and handing them to the next generation.
Hats off to Old Fort, NC.
IF you are in the area next year and want to see a slice of Americana, along with some great fireworks, check it out.
