Racing the Moving Van South

In the past, our base of operations has always been northern Michigan. This year we are flipping the coin and moving out principl residence to Florida. That means that we are racing the moving van south. Our trip south has always been liesurely, taking several weeks to enjoy the trip. Suddenly, the thought of a flat tire leads to immeasurable complications. Who knew that retirement would be so stressful ? I know that it will pass and probably be no big deal. The mind always finds things to stress out over. If nothing else is going on, we stress over a hangnail.

Actually, we arrived a day early and the van will arrive a day late. (But still within the contract window). That's ok with us, because it gave us time to unwind and get things organized. Now, if I could find an easy way to deal with an incompetant pool guy, life would be great. If my pool is my only problem, who am I to complain. 99.8% of the worlds population doesn't even have a pool.

Six years military, two grad school moves, and overseas job assignments, the only times I managed to beat the moving van was when the moving van was a container ship and I flew. Every other time, driving at a reasonable pace with overnight stops, the van unloaded into storage before I got there. Closest I got, I was only three hours from my destination when the van got to the warehouse and unloaded.

Many of the long haul movers run two drivers. They get paid by the ton-mile, not by the hour.

Budget mentally for destination storage and a wait for delivery. Then if you get there before the moving van, you can see it as a special boon, and rejoice.

Not a good idea. We are only moving part of the household, so trusting the movers to pack the right stuff could be disasterous.

The plan is to travel in summer. We still have the home in Michigan and several other properties, so we will definitely be back.

I hope you're planning to spend your summers back up in the Traverse City area. It's pretty nice in the summer while Florida can be pretty hot and sticky.

I cannot agree more. I tell my friends that if I knew how much fun retirement would be, I would have done it first!

Sure, there are sometimes a few bumps in the road, but they also occurred when working.

I just told a friend awhile ago that retirement has been the most dynamic part of my life (and I didn't sit around prior either.) I think it's because at this point in life you have unlimited choices to pursue, and the time to do it if you care too.

Who knew that retirement could be this involved/adventurous. I always thought retired people just sat around waiting for old man reaper to show up. LOL

Remember, you got a Visa card. Can always jump a plane, rent a car, or whatever..... Like I said too many choices.

Stress is caused by unresolved issues. Just drive as usual and get rest and sleep so you are alert. Most truck drivers don't race against time, as they also want to be safe. You're making a smart move.
