Gutters!

Have any of you folks done anything to improve the gutters on your RV. On my TT the gutter (and I use the term loosely) is about 3/4" wide by 3/4" deep. Any type of acorn or twig blocks it and dirty roof rain water pours over the side.

I'm thinking about cutting a piece of 2" PVC pipe in half and in using it as a proper gutter.

Yes...No...?

Photobucket was down most of yesterday for maintenance and is up now so links in my sig should be working now.

For the awning part what you need is to divert the water from the ends of the rolled up awning away from the sides of the trailer to prevent the black streaks.

Larry

Yep, pictures are back. I see what you did for the ends of the roller, I am not sure that I have enough room for that, but I will check into it

I have installed the raincap product noted a couple of posts above. On the non door side it has done a good job getting the runoff to drip about 2 inches from the side of the trailer, thus no runs on that side.

However, on the awning and door side it would not fit as the awning is mounted to close to the gutter to allow it space to hang down at the needed angle.

Unit is in storage, or I would add a photo

Yep I think I was one of the first and this has hands down been THE BEST mod I have done. Not only does it eliminate 99.9% of any black streaks, IMO it helps eliminate any leaks from any thing like windows/door/fittings that are under it since the water no longer runs down the sides for the most part. You can see more info in the link in my signature along with some actual pics of how it works when it rains.

A few random thoughts...

If rain is heavy enough to swamp the gutters, I don't think black streaks will result from that. The residue from the roof will be very diluted and the flooding water will carry it away. Steaks result from water slowly dripping down the sides. But, It Never Rains in Southern California, so what do I know???

I think adding 2" gutters might be excessively large. Maybe 1 1/2", or even 1" pipe would be quite larger than normal RV gutters.

Interested in seeing your results, because you may be quite the craftsman. In my minds eye, I don't see how it is not going to look pretty cr@appy. But willing to give you the benefit of the doubt until the photos are posted.

The clip-on downspouts for RV's have worked very well for us, to reduced the black streaks.

Be careful ripping PVC pipe. I have done it. And I was very surprised with how much stress there was in the pipe. I have had it pop open as it was sawed, but worse than that I have had it clamp down on my table saw blade. And you won't know what it is going to do until you're in the middle of a cut. Be prepared with wedges to insert in the kerf as you go.

if you have a manual awning use the "pull down stick" for the awning to keep the gutter clear. we can use the stick and walk around the trailer (except slide area) and clean out before a storm rolls in. Also use the extension or a clothes pin to keep the water away from the trailer!

I put extensions on mine to get the water away from the sides. I haven't had any problem with this set up, it helps keep the black streaks off the sides.

Your missing the fact I was wrong:)... if you have a 2 inch diameter pipe and rip it lengthwise you would be in essence cutting off the top of pipe. Got messed up thinking, good catch.

Couple years ago I got some vinyl base board and put in the gutter along with wooden doweling to keep the baseboard in place. Worked great first couple of months. Worked like a gutter extension over the side. And very little water ran down the side, if any. But later on it turned that was also bad idea. What I wasn't expecting was the vinyl to slowly sagg over and down. After it sagged over then it no longer provided any useful purpose.

undersized by a lot... and mine are not installed level.. sags in the middle.. both sides.. so water runs off down the walls.

keeping an eye on this thread...

My opinion only...so you'll go from 3/4 inch to 1 inch (being your cutting a 2 inch in half) you're only going to gain 1/4 of an inch.

Apparently I'm not following your logic. If you cut (rip) a 2" diameter pipe, each side will still be 2".
