Night Stand Shelf Wardrobe Cabinet Mod

So our Queen bed is in our rear slide. No night stands on either side. Nowhere for DW to put bottle of water, reading glasses or wine glass. DW's side of the bed was right next to her wardrobe. So we made a shelf, cut a hole in the side of the wardrobe and sunk a shelf in the opening. She lost a little room in the closet but still enough room to hang shirts on the side over the new recessed shelf.

8 inches is the interior height. Standard water bottle or small wine glass. For a bigger glass she might have to use stemless.

did you height check for her wine glasses? beautiful job, I always wonder why manufacturers don't put in side tables that are usable.

The wardrobe has two thin panels with a 1 inch hollow space. I'm sure you are shocked but no studs anywhere. We cut 1 inch boards and framed the opening before the shelf was inserted. Used sealant adhesive around the lip. Will check tomorrow when it dries and see how solid it is.

I agree, very nicely done. Thanks for sharing.

Terrific Job. From an old Trim Carpenter.
Now get some matching paneling (from your local building supply), cut the four sides and back to fit, turn the cut inserts to match the grain of the wood, but come corner molded trim pieces for the inside cuts, and wah-lah it will look like it came from the factory that way.
Well done. ๐Ÿ™‚

If it's built like my RV, you'd also need to drive a coupe of pin nails or staples that don't quite hit the framing and leave a slight or gap or two at the panel corners... ๐Ÿ˜‰
