17.5 tires

Right now I am running 235/85 Goodyear G614's on my 16,000# GVW fifth wheel. My pin is just under 3,000# at 2984#. I am looking to change the tires as they are carrying a 2009 date code on them... I have the ability to jump to 17.5 rims and tires.. I can't imagine there are any cons to make this move other than initial cost , but will ask anyway....Should I save the money and just do the direct replacement , or make the jump? Are the G114's hard to find on the road if needed ?..THX in advance..

I spoke to a tire guy that I know , he told me that the G114 at 17.5 are a heck of a lot stiffer and will beat up the camper...?? He has never seen a set put on one , does that sound right ?? He also said that I will NOT find one on the road....?

Any tire can have a problem. There is a thing called road hazard. That really is not the tires fault.

ramburgy what was the date code for the tire that exploded? One bad tire that is great. I have never had a tire problem on a RV. I don't think I should have said that!

Our G614's were less than 4 years per our repair shop when one exploded. They had 110 psi at 55 mph. Also we have been camping since 1974, and this is the first time we have ever had a tire problem.

I have ran the G614s and really liked them. Now I have the 17.5 wheels and G114 tires and am extremely pleased with them also. Quite an expense but if you can spend the bucks for new wheels and tires, I would definitely say go for it. Peace of mind is worth it to me.

We have used 3 sets of good year tires. First was the G-159's and two sets of G-614's. Never even had a flat yet. Never had a tire problem yet and almost 73 years young. Lucky is better than good!!

My first set was the originals that came with our 03 trailer, the second set were made in Feb 07 after the so called redesign. They only made it 2.5 years before one failed, no more GY G tires for me. I also like to buy stuff made in the USA but it also has to be dependable and the G 614 isn't.

2 years ago in 2012, I had 2 tires separate the tread in route to Florida during the same trip ... One in a rain storm in Baltimore... One at 9:30 at night on 95 in South Carolina... Both times we were at 65 or less...one was e street side rear.. The other was curb side rear...
No major damage.. Both were date code 08 from USA ..I found a dealer about 5 miles from us in the morning that had 4 with a 2012 date code... I took all 4.. Put them all on and the best non blown went under as spare..

Everyone with a blowout or tread separation with a GY G614 please state what year this was and the date code. Since 07 the GY G has been very trouble free. So those that keep reporting problems they had but don't tell the whole story make it harder for buyers to make an informed decision.

I would make the change in a heartbeat. In fact we did -- after one of our G614's blew out and did $6,000 worth of damage.

Put the 17.5's on and sleep a lot better at night. This also give you a chance to increase your load range.

When I switched over to 17.5 I sold the 4 tires & wheels I removed by sitting them out in front of the trailer in a campground. Got $500 from a guy that wanted to move up from his E rated tires with painted rims to the aluminum rims and G rated tires. Put that money back toward the cost of the 17.5's and wheels.

I switched to 17.5's for peace of mind. Remember, you do not need to change the spare. Keep your 16" space, as it can be used if a 17.5 goes flat. You cannot put the 16" tire on a 17.5 wheel, but you can put wheel and all on in place.

Very common experience with the 614, our first set had one that the tread came off but still have 110 psi in it. Our second set I found one starting to do the same thing so I was lucky that time, no damage. The Sumitomos are also cheaper that the 614 when it's time to replace them.

Did GY pay for the damages?

We are going to start the process tomorrow.
