Almost Too Much Excitment

We just got back from a 3.5 week trip through Canada.

At one of our stops, I was guiding the DH in to our site and I noticed a weird mud patch on one of the tires. After he stopped, I checked it out. It was a bulging bald spot bigger than my two hands. We were very lucky it did not blow. I figure it would have on our way to our next stop.

At some point the brake must of locked up and we dragged that tire an undetermined distance. It was rolling when we parked, so it was a temporary situation. We had an extra day built into our schedule, so we did not loose any real vacation time finding a new tire and getting it installed.

For the rest of the trip, I inspected all the tires as we parked, and made sure they were rolling as we left site.

There are a couple of tire engineers on this board, and they can likely tell you what happened. My vote goes toward a broken belt or straight up tread separation.

I don't think you had a brake to lock up. I'm guessing a tire defect or damage of some type.

An out of balance tire can cause wear that looks like that in the picture.
If the wheels have been balanced,a thrown weight could cause it.
I know, there are some folks that do not believe in having trailer wheels balanced,but.....

we had this happen to us a few years ago. we had a broke or disconnected break wire which caused the other tire on the same side to lock up when we applied brakes. we did have a spot in the tire where the tread was almost gone. this was in two spots. when we hit the break at slower speeds, this is when the other one locked up. But like everyone said, get to checking so you don't have some major happening that will cause harm to you, others or the trailer. Good luck & Be Safe ! ! !

You ("lmpkitti") "had" a problem..:(

You may still "have" a problem!..:(..:(

Check the BRAKE system, suspension, etc. - before something BREAKS again.

IMO - don't believe your brakes were at fault either - you need to find out what's going on - and why...:h

When the trailer was in the air I did some testing and couldn't get it to hang up again.
Next up is to tear the hub apart and inspect (and repair/adjust as needed)

Often time you'll see this from a broken belt that throws the tire extremely out of balance. I witnessed a badly OOB tire on a FW last year. LR tire was hopping a good 4" off the ground. Unfortunately, I didn't feel like running up to about 75 to try and warn the guy, as I was towing my own rig.

I am glad you spotted that before the tire blew and caused damage. Where in Canada did you travel. We have been in Milton, Ontario since April 15th amd are about to head up to North Bay.
