Has anyone installed shelves/ dividers/ drawers in the basement storage area? My stuff just gets pulled in there, and I'm thinking there ought to be a more efficient way.

Once a year, every year, the basement gets emptied out.

till it looks like this.

Then it all goes back in so that it looks like this

Then I can't find anything anymore.

Oh yes, that slide out tray is more than worth the space lost by it being there.

I have added a few shelves. Then I can set totes on top of them.
Then I can keep often used items like an extension cord or dog rope in plain sight.

I have one bay with a shellf across the top with enough room for two folding tables on top of it.

Also added a few curved hooks to store my Sat tripod and Genturi.

A good label maker is a worthy investment.

years back I bought some sets of drawers that were the exact height needed which worked great. now since I no longer have a basement they are in my s&b garage.

Good advice:
and, totes are labeled.

X2 on the labeling, unless you have an excellent memory and can remember what is inside all the totes.

X2 on the totes. Simple and effective. They can be rearranged or removed easily.

Yes, I've put several shelves in our basement area. It's a huge area, relatively speaking anyway, but like you say you have to stack stuff up to take advantage of the space. And this makes it plenty annoying when you have to dig stuff out all the time.

I made a small shelf near the water heater area that isn't very wide, and a full width one for all the chairs and stuff like that to go on. Makes the basement a much more useful area. Of course that translate into more room to carry more stuff. Hmm, quite the two edged sword. ๐Ÿ™‚
