Finally building an RV Garage at the house

Very excited to say after talking about it for a long time, we finally pulled the trigger a few weeks ago on a workshop with attached RV garage. The slab was poured before Christmas and then the weather got crappy. Steel frame erection was started early this week and then weather got crappy again. Hoping framework is finished this next week. We picked out tin colors today :). I am so ready to bring our 5er to the house as it will make it much easier to get ready for a trip and I just really like the idea of it being at home instead of storage lot. It will be completely protected from the elements when not being used (Texas Sun is a biggie) and it will be plugged into 50amp service all the time.
Just felt like sharing my excitement 🙂

I'll just add my obligatory 'warning' story about my own building of a garage just for the RV.

Long story short had a custom built building erected. Had the construction crew measure and measure again the height of the RV making sure they knew to include the AC unit. To make SURE they ordered a door high enough to accommodate the RV. The door was ordered and it was indeed taller than the height of my RV.

The door height was fine "BUT" the ever so slight incline of the concrete ribbon 'to' the front of the door was just enough too high that my RV when riding up the incline PREVENTED it from entering my brand new $$$$$ built, just for the RV garage, from being able to go inside. :(:(

Soo, be aware of any incline of the entrance to your new building not just the height of the door.

Thanks for the tip but hopefully it shouldn't apply here. Our land is fairly flat, the door is 14' tall and our unit is only 12'6" from ground to top of bedroom AC (highest point).

We must be willing to get rid of the life we've planned,

Our door will be 14' tall x 12' wide. The building will have 20' ceiling in the center with 16' wall height. We had it plumbed to have water and sewer clean out with easy access. My hope is for the 5er to be fully usable inside the garage if needed (shouldn't be needed but nice option to have). I agree, it will be nice to be able dump at home. It was definitely on the list of must haves in the planning stage.

We lived in our RV for 3-1/2 months inside the RV garage while getting the house finished. It might have been a lot longer except we had so much assistance with the reconstruction. One thing I did for more light was to add some Lexan side panels on the south and east sides. I didn't want skylights, too much heat during the summer. But since the sidewalls are 15 ft tall, I used 8 ft steel panels at the bottom and the Lexan panels at the top, this gave us light (but no direct view from inside or outside) and security. Most of the time I don't need to turn on the lights in the RV garage or inside the RV while packing or unpacking.

Love our garage. Mine is 24' x 52' x 16' with a 20' x 14' door. I still wish it was bigger.

So, whatever size you think you need, it isn't big enough.

Have fun!

You will really enjoy having your coach at home. We certainly do. We started with a parking pad next to my shop when we built 13 years ago. Added a roof for a carport when got our diesel motorhome in 05. After several run ins with wood rats chewing some wiring I enclosed it. It's 40 x 18 with a 12' wide x 13' tall roll up garage door. Our fifth wheel only has a couple of inches clearance when we back it in so be sure you get enough height. Besides 50 amp service we also have water close by and a sewer dump inside, or a clean out as the city inspector called it. If you can swing it that is the one thing that makes life easy. We don't have to worry about dumping before we get home.

We thought about a carport but we're needing to build a worshop anyway so it just made sense to put them together. Our workshop will be 30Dx40W with 15Dx40W covered porch in front of two 12Wx10H roll up doors. The attached RV garage will be 45Dx20W with 12Wx14H roll up door. We wanted to build both sides slightly larger (our 5er is 36'7") but the lay of our land where we wanted/needed to put it won't accomodate a deeper building. I believe it will suit our needs though just fine. I seriously doubt we will ever opt for a bigger 5er (maybe smaller) as it is just the 2 of us.

Had one built 10 years ago when we had a travel trailer. Had it built with 12 ft doors figured it was tall enough. Sold the trailer and bought our fifth wheel. Guess what it don't fit! Fifth wheel is 12 1/2 ft. Make sure its got tall enough doors for the future rv. Learn by others mistakes

Did it last spring. Not a garage, but a carport. No black streaks, no sun to make the roof fixtures brittle, It's GREAT.

It's also 12 feet high, and 35 feet long, and 14 feet wide. Metal roof, with treated 6x6 posts to hold it up.

Believe it or not, I haven't taken any pictures yet. I will do that tomorrow and post them if I can figure out how. I am just really excited to see progress out there.
