Need advice on Aux Fuel Tank

I am going to have to add an Aux tank for my F350 6.7 Thinking about in bed 50 Gal or so...I have looked at all the websites and combos...I have went from the TOP o Line Tool box combo with in cab indicator with internal transfer pump for about $1800 to a tank only gravity feed through splice into existing fuel hose $550 sold through Camping World with a $75 install fee.

I tend to "over buy" these things ,,, so my question is:

What is your experience with either type ? The high end guy told me that gravity drain tanks were only allowed by DOT on "commercial" rigs..yet CW ad states DOT compliant.

The tank I put in my truck, is plumbed right into the factory fuel pump. This way if I do get contamination in one tank, I can still use the other. The system is flawless and so far I've used the same tank in 2 trucks. I chose a smaller tank (36 gallons) so it fits under my rolling bed cover but they have all sizes and configurations. "American tank" was easy to work with.

I too went with the gravity feed tank like Go Pack Go, for the EXACT same reasons. Very simple and straight forward. I have the RDS 45 gallon right behind the cab, works great and I usually get fuel without the trailer and when I feel like getting fuel. We use the rest areas as they're more convenient, no drama getting in and out.

Very little advantage. When I first installed mine I had a cool lighted rocker switch which opened my valve for the gravity feed. When I reinstalled on my new truck I just use the valve on the tank. Works great. But I do miss my cool little lighted rocker switch!

I went with the gravity flow because it was simple - just an on/off valve needed. But it is a very slow flow rate (3/8 inch line ?). That really has no effect because the flow is higher then the fuel usage if you need to drive down the road with it 'on'. I just flip the switch to 'on' when I stop for the night. I could not see the advantage in using an electric pump either.

I think if you wanted to install a fuel filter system between the aux tank and the OEM tank, then you might want an electric pump. Not sure gravity flow would pull fuel through the filter very well.

* I have the RDS 40 gallon/tool box combo.

Thought I'd resurrect this thread since I'm about to pull the plug on a combo tank/toolbox assembly. I'm not quite sure I understand the advantage of outfitting a gravity fill tank with one of the small, electric lift pumps. Any ideas?

Reading this thread got me wondering, how many folks who have no problem carrying 70-100 gal of fuel around in a region where there are plenty of fuel stations are the same folks who don't carry water because it weighs too much?

I went to Escapee's (Smart Weight) and when they weigh you they want your fresh water tank topped off and also your fuel tanks this way they know your safely within the capacities of truck and trailer!

This way you know if you can carry both (fuel and water).

My stock Dodge holds 37 gallons. When towing I get 10mpg. Thats 370 miles. My legs and bladder can't handle driving any further so I'm gonna stop anyways. No need for an AUX tank for me!

Your stock tank is 35 gallons. You must be really good at timing your fuel stops so that you are empty when you fuel.

Just being a smart aZZ.

We have the 55 gallon inbed fuel tank so we can buy where it is easy and as above said pay the price and enjoy the ride. Our truck is just for pulling the alpenlite and then sits in the garage waiting for it's next trip south.

For me it was not about having to find fuel but the frequency of the fill. My truck came with a puny 26 gallon tank with about 23 usable. At 9-10 MPG when towing it seemed like I was filling all the time. I have a 50 gallon now and I like it much better. I can take just as many breaks when driving but I can choose the spots now. Plus I like only having to fill the tank once a week or less when I am using the truck unloaded.

Did you check with Transfer Flow to see what size replacement tank they had?

I agree 26 gallons is way too small.

Has anyone ask their truck manufacturers about warranty issues. The fuel systems on the latest round of truck have become very complex. An injector pump failure can now cost 10 grand.

Does anyone factor in the cost of packing around an extra 400 pounds of fuel and tank?

Do SRW trucks end up being overloaded with the extra fuel. Most larger 5th wheels put the rear axle of TV near their Max.

Just asking! Not attacking! Why does OP say he must have an aux tank. I have had two diesel trucks starting in 95, and have never not been able to get fuel. On our first long trip after retiring we carried 6 gallons of extra diesel. After 6 weeks and getting close to home again, I finally dumped it in to get rid of it. Chris

I used to pack a 5 gallon Gerry can full of diesel but never really needed it. I came close one tine because I was being stubborn and wanted a better price and kept driving.

The reality is $.05 savings on a 30 gallon fill is only $1.50 ! I used to trip over nickels, not anymore!

Hit the truck stops, pay the price and carry on.

Those things aren't my cup of tea. I also have the 6.7 in a 350 dually. I pull a 38ft. MS and we look forward to stopping for gas just for the break. And I have read on here that those things increase you chances of getting water in the fuel. Not for me.

I agree about the stopping for fuel. Never been a problem for us.

If I wanted more fuel capacity I would get a Transfer Flow 50 gallon or so replacement for the stock tank.

I would never give up any of the space I have in my HighwayProducts bed height X 30" tool box.

Also if I need my full bed for any reason the tool box is easy to remove. Not so easy with a in bed fuel tank.
